Cinesite Wins the VFX Contract for Dawn Treader

Cinesite – a special effects company based in London – has just announced that they have won the primary special effects contract for The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

Here is the press release:

October 02 2009 – Cinesite today confirmed that we have won a large contract for visual effects on the latest installment in the highly successful Chronicles of Narnia series, The Voyage of The Dawn Treader.

This news follows other recent major announcements, including a large award of work for Fox’s Marmaduke, and winning an Emmy award for Outstanding Special Visual Effects for HBO’s highly acclaimed mini-series Generation Kill two weeks ago.

More announcements about new production awards are likely to be made over the coming two weeks. Cinesite is currently undertaking a major international recruitment drive, and is refurbishing key areas of our Soho-based Sheraton Street facility to accommodate the influx of new, exciting projects.

Dawn Treader, Directed by Michael Apted, follows the continuing adventures of Lucy and Edmund Pevensie, as they return to Narnia with their cousin Eustace. They meet up with Prince Caspian for a trip across the sea aboard the royal ship The Dawn Treader. Along the way they encounter dragons, dwarves, merfolk, and a band of lost warriors before reaching the edge of the world.

The production is currently filming on the Gold Coast of Australia. Angus Bickerton is Visual Effects Supervisor (Angels & Demons, Inkheart, The Da Vinci Code, Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy) and Barrie Hemsley is Visual Effects Producer (Angels & Demons, 10,000 BC, 1408). Cinesite’s Matt Kasmir and Jensen Toms are supervising the 2D and 3D aspects of our work (both have recently worked on Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time).

The Voyage of The Dawn Treader is scheduled for release in late 2010.

Up until now, we haven’t heard anything official about which special effects companies were working on Dawn Treader. While we believe Framestore and Moving Picture Company (both worked on Prince Caspian) did some work on VDT at some point, it’s nice to have some official news on a special effects company.

Cinesite is also currently working on Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows: Part 1 and Part 2, Naked Beauty, Clash Of The Titans, Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time, Marmaduke, Leap Year and The Prisoner.

Cinesite’s website can be found here.

No kidding…after that feast we had, we're starving for some news!!! 😉

  2. Fire Fairy says:

It does come out on DVD (e.g. Spy Kids,Journey to the Center of the Earth, Bolt…). The only problem is, to get it as 3D, you have to buy a special DVD with special 3D glasses, and it doesn't usually work very well. And if you get it on regular DVD, some of the shots look screwed up.

Io vi toatly d'accordo con lei! È davvero interessante. Sono nuovo qui, nessuno sa italiano?

  4. Princess Arya says:

And the comments on here continue to grow and grow!

Are those actual words? They look like it but google can't translate them.

  6. aslan'schild says:

it says something like: "Toatly I will agree with you! It's really interesting. I'm new here, nobody knows Italian?" No i dont know italian, i think my great grandmother on my father's side might though…

  8. aslan'schild says:

it says something like: "that dad is hurting this but I have to endure until 2010 that hurts jajajaja mmmmm" it doesnt really make any sence but.. whoever "dad" is anyway…

  9. aslan'schild says:

  11. Peters Unicorn says:

Harry Gregson-Williams isn't composing the music any more? That is really sad! I'm sorry, I haven't been on for a long time, and am a little confused with some stuff. I think they should NOT do it in 3D, by the way. Can't wait until VDT is in theatres!!!!!!!

  12. Aslan's my homeboy says:

haha I love that line… I love Edmund

  13. Mark Friedrich says:

What, Did I miss something? I didn't know that Harry Gregson-williams is not composing the music.

  14. Princess Arya says:

I liked Gregson-Williams' music. And everywhere I looked on the Internet, it doesn't really say why he left. As I said, I would like him for the sake of continuity. But you know, Wikipedia does say that while the music is going to be composed by David Arnolds, the main themes are still supposed to be by Gregson-Williams, so that sounds nicer for continuity's sake, basically about solving the problem. (I assume he won't change the entire Narnia theme and such.)

I did read this afternoon (when I looked all of it up) that the 'Prince Caspian' score was aimed more towards the style of that of Howard Shore in Lord of the Rings. And I know that's because PC was more of a LOTR copy, but what I'm thinking is that maybe I will like Arnolds' take on the music after all because it should be different. (I guess I'll have to hear it when it comes out before I can make any final choices though!)

    In my opinion it's swearing,but I'm not offended 🙂
Yeah,at my place everyone gawks if I say 'ass' and not mean the donkey.WEIRD!!!!

  19. NarniaNut says:

I was blown that I couldn't see *ahem* KING Caspian in the theaters but now I don't really mind because it fell short of my expectations. They probably would've been thrown me out of the theaters for yelling:'HUH?Excuse me,WHEN exactly did this happen in the books?' so many times. 🙂

  20. NarniaNut says:

Ha HA,thanks Fire Fairy, you made me laugh!! 🙂

  21. NarniaNut says:

*RAVAGING EVERYTHING IN SIGHT,HUNTING FOR THAT SO DESIRED THING,LOOKING UNDER TABLES FOR NEWS…*
    GGGAAAAHHHH!!!!Gotta calm down!
    *pant,pant*

  22. Frodo Fan says:

Harry Gregson-Williams did copy Lord of the Rings music in Prince Caspian. I am a fan of Lord of the Rings so i could tell. I am eager to see what the music will sound like in Voyage of the Dawn Treador. I hope it is better than Prince Caspian. That movie wasn't that great.

  23. Lucille Brown says:

I thought it was cool that:
Lucy and Edmund had to wait one year,
Narnia had to wait three years,
but Narnia fans (us) have to wait two years for Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

  24. Mark Friedrich says:

I can't believe that. He was amaizing doing the music for the Narnia movies. Who will take his place for VOD

  25. Matthias of Redwall says:

good way to put it 🙂

  26. Fire Fairy says:

    Glad to be of service!

  27. Mark Friedrich says:

    Yea you both could.

  28. Mark Friedrich says:

Calm Down NarniaNut, I'm sure that they will have news.

  29. Fire Fairy says:

Huh, I didn't know that. Then again, I haven't seen LotR, so of course I wouldn't know whether Gregson-Williams copied the music or not. But that's okay, he still did a great job. I hope David Arnolds does just as well as or better than Gregson-Williams. We'll just have to wait and see.

  30. Fire Fairy says:

Interesting. Never thought of that. (Why couldn't it be us that had to wait one year?)

  31. Mark Friedrich says:

Well, if Mr. Gregson-williams is copying the music, That to me is diffenitly not right, I think he should of made the music origional. Nothing personal to the compuser.

  32. Princess Arya says:

I don't know if he really COPIED it. But if you listen to the soundtracks they sound the same style.

  33. JoK3R says:

wow. after this comment I think its obvious that we are all dying for new news! lol

  34. King Skandar the Just says:

Yes!!! I want news!!! Does anyone know where they are filming now???

  35. narniafan4ever says:

No, noi non conoscono l'italiano, ma si può usare un traduttore. 🙂
    Benvenuti a bordo del veliero!

  36. Mark Friedrich says:

    Don't rush them

  37. Matthias of Redwall says:

well, ya know, my opinion is that if you actually
think about it, the music in alot of
action/adventure movies really and truly does sound surprisingly similiar.
So anyways, I don't think he coppied
the Lord of the Rings music.

  38. narniafan4ever says:

Yes, let's keep Jesus in the story! 😀

  39. aslan'schild says:

i… dont… CARE!!!!!!! YOU!!! SEND!!!! NEWS!!!! NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i think theres something wrong with me, im like going mental or something here… help.

  40. Mark Friedrich says:

Hold it, it takes time. I want some news too, but sometimes it just takes time

  41. Long Live King Skandar says:

Aren't they still filming at MovieWorld or something? After all, they still need to shoot all the inside shots and scenes of the ship as well as use other sets for the Dufflepuds, for example. Just maybe. It helps to know that they were halfway done the whole thing a couple weeks ago, something like that. Soon, all that will be left is post-production, and then a TRAILER!!!!!!! *screams* chanting, "we want trailer! we want trailer! we want trailer!" probably sometime next year. Spring, maybe.

  42. Lucy says:

I really like your pic to Jadisstarkiller! 🙂

  43. Lucy says:

I really like Caspian looks like.
And Lucy in her red shirt I just love how they look 🙂

  44. Lucy says:

Oh and the BBC VDT is like the best, I also really like Eustuse! 🙂

  45. Bookwyrm says:

Meh, if PC's score was meant to emulate Howard Shore's work on LotR, HGW definitely missed the mark. The music for LotR was absolutely gorgeous, HGW's scoring for the Narnia movies was adequate at best.

  46. narnia365 says:

    Oops… I didn't mean to cause this… sorry!

  47. Peepicheep says:

CONGRATULATIONS CONGRATULATIONS CONGRATULATIONS CONGRATULATIONS CONGRATULATIONS! 😀 😀

  48. Fire Fairy says:

    I'm sorry, but I don't speak Italian. I wish I did, though…

  49. Fire Fairy says:

I doesn't help that we're all checking NarniaWeb 25 times a day and commenting a third of the time just because we have nothing else better to do….

  50. Fire Fairy says:

Yeah, they probably are still shooting. Maybe once they're done in MovieWorld there'll be more news…*crosses fingers*…
