Episode 85: Studying in Oxford—the city of Lewis
Running time 37:15
Some of you know Rilian studied at Oxford University through a study abroad programme almost four years ago. Today he interviews two fans of Lewis (including NarniaWebber LadyLiln) who talk about how studying in Oxford has been more than they ever dreamed as they discuss what it’s like literally walking the same paths as C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. For information on the programme, go to http://www.summitoxford.org or “Like” their Facebook page. UPDATE: A new video featuring Franklin along with his CS Lewis tutor, Dr. Michael Ward, is available here on YouTube.

That's awesome. I think it would be fun to study at Oxford.
That was a very pleasant listen.
An unfair world indeed! I hope to visit Oxford someday.
I really enjoyed this episode. Rilian's video here really goes along nicely with the presentation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-oM8eNnWbU – helps you picture what he's talking about.
What happened? Part of my comment disappeared! (It only said "first comment" so its not like it was important, but still.)
Thanks for the link Tirian!
You people are making me wish I went to school in Britain now 😛 Can some one explain to me that thing that wasn't a class again? Just curious 🙂
Ah, I still have a few years to go before college begins, but this is a cool possibility. 🙂 Besides, I've always wanted to go to Europe. Maybe for a semester…
In the meantime, I'm starting to read more works by Lewis and starting some Tolkien things. Out of the Silent Planet, for example, I would recommend to any who have not read this work yet.
Wow it would be so cool to lead almost the exact path of C.S Lewis and J.J.R Tolkien! I wish i was born in Europe now! Oxford would be an incredible place to study! I love the book Out of the Silent Planet it is an awesome book! But I also love Peralandra as well. If you havent read it you have to.
Wolfloversk, the programme is a study abroad for students wishing to study one term (or more) in Oxford, England. And technically they don't have to be Americans. We've had a woman from the Netherlands who attended in my group, and I interviewed a Kiwi who was interested as well.
The tutorials are one on one meetings with Oxford scholars typically once a week or once a fortnight. The rest of the time, you are studying and working hard in the library, hence you must be a very self-motivated student.
Indeed! This is from another student in the group, Ben.
Have you read LOTR yet? (Lord Of The Rings)
Or the Hobbit? (I can't wait for that to come out in a movie!!)
I really like quotes by C.S. Lewis, they're really deep. But anyway, enjoy reading them!
That is so cool!! I live in the UK, but i've never really considered oxford before. Maybe something to think about though 🙂
My sentiments exactly.
definitely unfair because now I want to go there even though I cannot unfortunately. At least when I did not know as much about this place I did not wish that I could be there. Now I do. Ignorance is bliss. 🙁 lol
I trying to looking into studying abroad now!
I really wish I could go to Oxford! 🙂 It is my dream university!
Interesting… (Unfortunately I'm not the best at self motivation… 🙁 ) Sounds cool though… I'm actually trying to look into some study abroad/ internship programs in the biological sciences, but it must be awesome to study with top professors/scholars one on one like that…
Sorry, I thought that was your's. Still pretty cool…. 🙂
And here is a video I filmed at the Kilns: CS Lewis's home in Headington, Oxford. http://youtu.be/g4DcHvBmQX0
it is my life dream to live in England and go to Oxford University! been praying over it 😀
I was blessed to be able to study at a college in Oxford. Back in 1995, I spent a term at Westminster College. It was a defining moment in my life and really expanded my worldview. I hope to be able to return some time and enjoy it once more.
Well, our study abroad programme is the only one that can offer labs for science students. They're harder to acquire for students, but our people always have a few students each term who have a lab. It is definitely a possibility.
Oxford is a place that I really hope to visit someday
How far is London from Oxford? I really want to go see it. I also want to see Addison's Walk. That would be amazing to see where Lewis lived and walked.
Oxford is a little over an hour bus ride from London. It's about an hour and forty minutes from London Heathrow Airport. There are lots of buses straight to Oxford, and it's easy to get to.
Thanks! Great interview by the way. I always enjoy the NarniaWeb podcasts.
I wonder if Lewis ever imagined a fan would be filming a web video at his desk 50-60 years after he wrote the Narnia books 😛
Indeed. I've heard there's a new CS Lewis College starting up. I wonder what he would have thought of that.
Nice, But it's hard to say no to my school. It's also hard to say no to my english proffesor, because he is so hilarius. But I have wondered what it would have been like to have Lewis for an instructor.
There's another Lewis fan writing about her experiences in Oxford, if anyone is interested. Search for "oxford chronicles" at rabbitroom.com
