Lewis’ ‘The Great Divorce’ To Be Filmed
Fans of C. S. Lewis will be interested to learn that his 1945 novel The Great Divorce has been slated for film production, according to Variety’s Dave McNary. Mpower Pictures and Beloved Pictures will join forces to produce the film, with author N.D. Wilson hired to write the screenplay. The Great Divorce is the story of a fantasy journey from Hell to Heaven, with themes of Lewis’ Christianity woven throughout. You can read Variety’s story here.

"The Great Divorce" as a movie? I'm not sure how that would work.
The book is brilliant but I too don't know how they would go about doing it. For many years 'The Great Divorce' sat unread on our family bookshelf. I generally enjoyed C.S. Lewis' works but I never read this one until a few years ago because (as a child)I mistakenly believed it was about the benefits of divorce!
This is nearly my favorite book Lewis ever wrote and I'm thrilled! – but also, considering that the director of the much abused film version of The Dark is Rising is on the project, I'm very VERY nervous.
Lol Warrior 4 Jesus, when I was little I thought the Fellowship of the Ring was about a "ring" (as in a circle of people) that was a fellowship(get it? fellowship? ring?).
I'm interested in seeing what they do to the book as a movie. But am willing to skip it if they destroy it.
Ah, The Great Divorce is a terrific book. I don't know how it will look as a movie, but hopefully good. I hope it's…all right, though. Not wandering over the edge that the point is missed.

That's funny ShyGaladriel! Like a circle of friends? Lol! I never fully understood LotR till I was 12 or 13. 😉 I thought The Great Divorce was something about a divorce too, since C.S. Lewis was divorced. 🙁

Cool! I haven't read that book yet, but I guess I probably should. From what I've heard about it, I wouldn't have expected anyone to make a movie of it, but if N.D. Wilson is writing the screenplay it'll definitely be good. 🙂

Cunningham is actually a very good director (To End All Wars is his work–EXCELLENT movie). He's the son of Loren Cunningham, founder of Youth With a Mission, and (I believe) a Christian. I think the travesty of The Seeker can be far more blamed on the inexcusably bad screenplay, and the obvious lack of enthusiasm for the project on all levels. Cunningham did what he could given what he had, but I honestly don't see how ANYONE could have made a decent film with that script. So don't despair just yet. Let's wait and see. I just think it's an intriguing project, and it'll be interesting to watch it develop. 🙂 <><

I thought when I was little that the Great Divorce was about why you shouldn't get divorced so I didn't understand for a while why my parents thought the book was so interesting, since we listened to Focus on the Family a bunch and knew why divorce was not good.
Lewis' wife had been divorced, but he hadn't.
I hope they do this movie the right way so people will know what Lewis was trying to say.

Sounds interesting, I just began reading this book and am enjoying it. I can visually see it in my mind, but a movie harder to do but intriguing.
hmm….cool, but i wonder how they're going to do it, cuz it doesnt seem like the kind of book that can be made into a movie. well, we'll have to see then how they pull it off.
I've never read the book (maybe someday I will) but my older sister has. I think it sounds cool. Fantasy worlds between Hell and Heaven. Sound pretty darn cool to me. 🙂 I like C.S. Lewis.

I read The Fellowship of the Ring recently. It was a good book. Buy man was it loooooong! Especially the chapter titled "The Council of Elrond." But still I read it pretty fast. I'm planning on reading The Two Towers, but I can't rigt now cause I'm reading the third and fourth book of Guardians of Ga,Hoole. Thier good books! I read the first and second one already. Ther're quite interesting. Can't wait till that movie Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga,Hoole comes out in September!!!! 🙂 😀
I read the book and it's wonderful but I don't think it would fly as a film.

Yeah, LotR is long, but I don't mind. For me I can't get enough, both movies, DVDs, special features, merchandise, books,etc.! 😉 I saw the Owls of Ga'hoole trailer! It was spectacular! I especially want to watch even more because it's Celtic based, it's from the makers of "Happy Feet", oh and David Wenham (Faramir from "LotR") plays Digger, & Hugo Weaving (Elrond from LotR) plays Noctus/Grimble. Haven't read the books yet. Though I do want to. I bet it's an easy read, since it was in the 4th-6th grade section.

I think this is a bad idea. I think it wd work fine in film, but there is no way that the producers will get it right. Lewis is too deep for a shallow Hollywood treatment.

Someone said they wished C.S. Lewis hadn't married "that divorcee". I understand your point of view, but think about it this way. If C. S. Lewis hadn't married Joy Greshem, he wouldn't have had any descendants to care about what happened to the series. Doug Greshem, his step-son, wouldn't be the president of his estate, or co-producer on the films, and you and I wouldn't have the Narnia movies as we know them! lol! 🙂
Tolkien didn't want him to marry Miss Gresham. He was a Catholic & so am I. It is against God's commandment: Thou shall not commit adultery (fornication, impurity, marry someone else's spouse,etc.)to do divorce under pain of mortal sin. What about C.S. Lewis's soul?! He could've married someone else who was a widow too, and not divorced! C.S. Lewis would have never written Narnia anyways, without Tolien & God's grace
Ooops, I accidentally clicked on submit comment… Anyhoo, C.S. Lewis would have never written the books if Tolkien & the help of God's grace, never helped him to at the very least believe in God. I don't want an argument, but I just don't want the very thought of C.S. Lewis marrying a divorcee was ok or even beneficial in people's heads! It's the trick of the devil! Hmmm, interesting. I've never read The Great Divorce. From what I've read about it, I don't think I would care for it as much as the other books of his that I've read. I might like to see the movie, though.
I'm amazed at how many have not read this book, probably due to the obscure meaning of the title. I am very excited about the prospect of this book being made into a movie as I honestly have felt for years that this is the most important message of all to get across to the world. There are only two types of people in the world: those who say to God,"Thy will be done" and those to whom God says "Thy will be done". We all make this decision and it is wonderful to have it laid out so creatively in this book.
I am above all concerned that they do a worthy job of presenting it to the world. It deserves the very best treatment!
Those of you who haven't read the book, you're in for a treat as Lewis' wisdom pours over you.
