Greta Gerwig’s Narnia Begins Filming in July 2025!
In a new interview with Deadline, producer Amy Pascal confirmed that Netflix’s Chronicles of Narnia adaptation, directed by Greta Gerwig, will begin filming in July 2025. (She talks about Narnia at the 21:19 mark)
This marks a major milestone for the project, which has been in development since Netflix acquired the rights to the series in 2018.
After years of speculation and anticipation, this confirmation finally puts Narnia fans on a firm timeline. If the production stays on schedule, the first film could realistically hit its targeted late-2026 release window.
Pascal’s announcement suggests that key pre-production tasks—casting, location scouting, and set design—are either underway or imminent. We reported earlier this week that filming will take place at Shepperton Studios in England, according to The Times. If all goes according to plan, this will be the first Narnia movie since The Voyage of the Dawn Treader in 2010.
Additionally, Pascal was asked if this would be a “new take” on Narnia.
“A very new take. It’s all about rock and roll,” she replied. What did she mean by this? Was it meant in jest? Comment below!
Stay tuned to NarniaWeb for all the latest updates as Netflix’s The Chronicles of Narnia project continues to take shape.
7 months away!? Someone pinch me…
Hopefully a good new take and not a bad one
Rock and Roll… really? Why couldn’t she just say she didn’t want to answer? Does Amy Pascal have no media training?
Considering there is news today that Greta is trying to exit the project, I hope this is still going ahead. Narnia projects always feel so fragile.
Looking forward to months of over-analyzing the rock and roll quote haha! “Rock and roll” bit is clearly a joke. Here’s why:
1. Seriously, what would that even mean?
2. If is was true, she would not have revealed it in this way.
3. It looks like a joke in context. She was taking “new take” to an extreme, that’s the joke. It clearly went over the interviewer’s head so he just nodded and said “wow okay.”
Bring on the fan art. 😉
Maybe Pascal wanted to say that they were ready to “rock and roll” and get production moving but this is how it came out? It could be a joke as well. Whatever the case, it’s clear she didn’t want to reveal any specifics here.
Wait Greta is trying to leave?
Rock and Roll eh? Well, I guess Magician’s Nephew does contain at least one “musical” sequence when Aslan sings the world into creation… I wonder if Lions can play the Electric Guitar?
In all seriousness though, I don’t think anyone needs to take that part of the comment too seriously – we kind of know what Greta’s musical tastes are (Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift, Charli XCX, and the like) therefore even if she were adding musical themes, it wouldn’t be rock and roll.
Amy Pascal was simply being sarcastic. Reporters tend to ask questions they now will bring more traffic and conversation. Amy being the vet she is, knows how sharing a quote so early in production can taint the project a la Snow White. For the Narnia fans I can imagine being so deeply protective of something that intersects with faith, childhood philosophy and has brought you into a new community but I think it’s also important to be generous in spirit. I think there are people who are far more cautious about Greta’s involvement maybe given her previous work or her relationship to Christian faith and that is completely understandable, but without generosity every update you will hear will be another reason to disregard the adaptation. There is a contingent of cinephiles who are rooting for it fall apart because they are not fans of Netflix, Narnia or even Greta (similar to how Barry Jenkins is being treated for his Mufasa) and another contingent who were not fans of her work in Barbie and rooting for her fail. (Emphasis on contingent, not entire population) Hence some of the updates to come will be greatly distorted and people will act in bad faith in their interpretation of the comments in a very reactionary way as it it would validate their already held beliefs. No greater than the quote shared by aggregate accounts on twitter without context , source or even video. Given the deep secrecy through which Greta and her husband work, in all fairness if you truly believe she is unfit for the project, there will not be any in the months to come that would change your mind like an Expo or interview or panel, there simply won’t and that’s fine too. Your feelings and fears are completely fair.
*EDITED-Amy Pascal was simply being sarcastic. Reporters tend to ask questions they now will bring more traffic and conversation. Amy being the vet she is, knows how sharing a quote so early in production can taint the project a la Snow White-some sects of the audience had already turned on the film before set photos or the trailer due to the comments of certain people involved . For the Narnia fans I can imagine being so deeply protective of something that intersects with faith, childhood philosophy and has brought you into a new community but I think it’s also important to be generous in spirit. (Emphasis on contingent, not entire population- quite aware that most people who may not be fans of her work hold NO ill will against her ) Hence some of the updates to come will be greatly distorted and people will act in bad faith in their interpretation of the comments in a very reactionary way as it would validate their already held beliefs. No greater example than the quote shared by aggregate accounts on twitter without context , source or even video. Your feelings and fears are completely valid and no one will be able to change your mind, or should try to.
SEVEN MONTHS TILL FILMING!!!!!!
Also the Rock and Roll comment was likely (and had BETTER be) a joke.
Surely in jest, I was going to say! (The comment about rock n roll.) If that was an accurate, honest description of the proposed production, I suspect that is not the way it would be announced! That would also be kind of what Aldrich said about updating Narnia and “having fun with it”. And I thought that’s not what Netflix wanted…
A filming date in less than 8 months!
I’m excited, however…
In 2017 Joe Johnston told us a timeframe for principle photography (winter) and a location (New Zealand).
Today we have a timeframe (July) and a location (Shepperton Studios). So are we being too hopeful?
Not at all, let’s party! Seems like the stars are in the right places, according to the Narniaweb Centaur scouts! Woo hoo!
Surreal to finally have a shooting date!
No idea what to make of the rock and roll comment. It has April Fool’s vibes, if I’m being honest! 😛 BTW, @icarus, Gerwig doesn’t just listen to contemporary pop artists. Last year for Far Out Magazine, Gerwig shared eight songs she couldn’t live without, and all of them predate 1975. The list included The Who, Elvis Presley, and David Bowie.
Guys, I’m not convinced that was entirely a joke.
Not sure what she means by it and I know it doesn’t make much sense to us yet, and I might be wrong here but to me, nothing in her manner suggests flippancy.
Perhaps she meant something like… it’ll subvert everything that came before.
But I suppose we’ll have to await some context from Greta herself.
Buzzing for a shooting schedule though!
Amy pascal ‘s comment isn’t supposed to be taken seriously regarding “the rock n roll” stuff everyone and people on social media (Twitter) are freaking out about. Unless if you haven’t watch previous interviews of Amy, you might not understand her mannerisms as she give the vibe of an aunt who talks about their nephews/ nieces’ successes to an exaggerated extent to friends and family members. The focus most of the people who are worried should focus on the person who actually movie the film writing and directing wise which is Greta regarding her approach as she mentioned her “thinking of Narnia” and those who follow how she explain the understanding of Narnia would based on the snippets of interviews she been doing would themselves determine if she knows her stuff, not Amy who just their who isn’t the author but just assist with what need to improve the story like casting or set production and so forth. This momentum people are having about this movies give the vibe prior to Barbie release, which is why before anything until there are hints from the vibe of the movie from “some photos” to the first teaser/ trailer that release, people should take everything they hear with grain of salt not an ego-driven manner about something they haven’t been invested on or haven’t gone to full length to understand (referring to the humans who on Twitter or other social media who discussing it). People should not overhype everything they hear for the better or worse cause that expectations should be reasonable not to disappoint certain things, that saying if we go on the topic of “faith” if you have faith on something, you would feel it and the backstory (say for Greta her previous work) should give context not what some media or news opinions are about something, they are there to start up conversations not tell you a person’s artistry.
Wow, we actually got a filming date! I’ve been kind of expecting this production to get cancelled after what happened with that Silver Chair movie and Matthew Aldrich’s show. But now…well, I guess it’s still possible for it to get cancelled but I’m not expecting it as much.
At first, I was bummed about the “rock and roll” quote since it sounded stupid but then I remembered that it was a producer talking, not the director or the screenwriter so maybe it doesn’t mean that much. Or maybe it does but I don’t want to spend two years fretting about it.
“A very new take. It’s all about rock and roll,” now this comment makes me have mixed feelings. Is she being sarcastic? Was that a pun? I am not sure if I should overthink. But hey after more than a decade, we finally have a date of when the filming will start. Despite the then progress with Joe Johnston years ago, I hope that this time we will really have the adaptations we deserve.
I hope they’ll still stick to the books’ themes and do not do diverse cast nor butcher the stories. For now, let’s see what they have in their tables.
is it too much to ask for them to use some parts of the first 2 Narnia films’ OST? or even have the Pevensie (including Ben Barnes) casts reprise their roles as older Pevensies? For old times sake 😀
Hey could someone please tell me if will comment is true cause I’m confused. Is Greta really trying to exit the Narnia project.
I don’t know who this person is but Shes on some kind of meds and everything about her just creeps me out. just a bad feeling now about the whole thing.
I don’t think Amy Pascal fully knew what these words were going to do to the internet. Excited for Greta Gerwig and I’m positive she’d never described her Narnia adaptation this way!
@ Roderic Gurrola
There’s nothing to indicate that rumor is anything more than someone’s wishful thinking. Greta Gerwig is moving forward with Narnia at this point!
Thank you imending doom. That has a squirrel picture kinda hilarious but any way thank you. Also realized I was using my name let me fix that.
Having a new Narnia movie quote to over-analyze makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside. 😀
My gut reaction to a “very new take” Narnia was negative. My mind immediately went to the story in the books being changed beyond recognition. Thinking about it more though… if the approach to the new movies is very different from the Walden movies (e.g. not trying to be a blockbuster, not trying to imitate whatever franchise is popular at the moment), that could be a good thing. It just depends on what is different in this new take. Either way, the “very new take” part of the quote struck me more than the “rock and roll” part because I assume the latter was a joke.
Or she was being dead serious and we’re getting a Narnia rock opera.
I don’t think we need to put too much stock in the “Rock N Roll” quote. My best guess, is that she means they intend to give the movie everything they have to make it great. Though, considering The Magician’s Nephew is to be the first movie, and this is the first time that story has ever been adapted to the screen, I imagine anything will be great. I’ve been longing for that story to be adapted ever since I read the book when I was a kid, so this was awesome news to me.
Respectfully, y’all are overanalyzing. By saying “very new take” she was merely using the words that were given to her by the interviewer “new take”. The mark of a very astute person that isn’t trying to give anything away. The “rock and roll” comment is so sarcastic, I’m surprised anyone thinks otherwise. It honestly doesn’t even deserve mentioning. The point is, filming in JULY.
Rock and roll, baby! Ha ha! This just might be the first time “rock and roll” has been used to describe Narnia. Something tells me Lewis would have found that description very amusing.
The rock and roll comment ✨ clearly ✨ indicates that they do HHB first: Think of the many rocks (in the desert, the mountains and the valley in between – and Thornbut injuring his ankle by stumbling over a stone right before the battle). And “roll” is obviously a smug nod at Bree’s dubious habit of rolling on his back.
@Moonwood the Hare, if we could “like” comments on Narniaweb articles ala Facebook or Twitter or Instagram, I would “like” yours.
Countdown begins!
The interviewer’s reaction had me howling though! “wow… ok…”? Let’s save our breath, folks. This is a giant nothing of a quote.
I’m afraid of that “rock n roll” part…. I wanted folklore vibes Narnia
Like others, I’m guessing the “all about rock and roll” was not to be taken too seriously — well, I hope. I would definitely like the new Narnia adaptation to be a “very new take”, given that for me, Walden absolutely bombed with LWW and got worse from there on in. We could do with a totally fresh approach from a director who seems to know the actual books very well and to have a real respect for C.S. Lewis and what he was doing. And I doubt there’s ever going to be an approach to adapting Narnia that satisfies absolutely everyone! I’m willing to wait it out and see what happens, now that we have some real news and some real target dates at last.
(And as for taking the comment literally, a Narnia rock opera would definitely be something different and might be worth watching just for the heck of it, even if it turned out to be on the “so bad it’s good” level… 😀 )
I worry that they’re taking advantage of the fact that Douglas Gresham, the biggest defender of C.S. Lewis’ legacy, is ill. That happened with Amazon and Rings of Power; Christopher Tolkien was an ardent defender of his father’s work, and when he passed away, Amazon went forward with producing an excessively expensive fan-fiction. I worry that Netflix is going to recreate Narnia in their own feminist/atheistic image instead of honoring the original story. If that’s the case, I won’t watch it, but I won’t be angry about it either, because that’s what they want. I’ll just deny them any attention, positive or negative.
I’m going to be optimistic and assume referring to rock and roll means that the movie is supposed to display new artistry and styles like rock and roll did to the music industry. Rock and Roll was more popular after Narnia, so I can’t see it actually being incorporated unless Narnia is no longer in it’s historical timeframe. I mean the Pevensies were children during World War 2, so it follows that if they had all survived the train accident, then they would face their peers becoming part of the hippie movement as they grew older. This would be interesting as the Pevensies have a history of overthrowing tyrants, however they also understand the need for war and sound judgement instead of peace at any cost. They understand the dangerous power of enchantments by witches which is somewhat applicable to drug addiction and so they would definitely oppose the hippie drug culture.
But what would this mean? Would it be a what if the Pevensies had lived longer story or would it be set in the sixties instead of the forties? Is it another commentary comparing the deplorable word to the danger of the nuclear age? I mean, we are basically in the new cold war and drug addiction is more widespread than ever so addressing these things would be very modern.
Next episode of the pod, do a draft of Narnians you’d want in your rock band
