‘Dawn Treader’ Makes $12.4m, Slips to Number 3
The Voyage of the Dawn Treader made an estimated $12.4m in its second weekend, bringing its domestic total to $42.7m. Together with its foreign box office totals of $123m, the film has now made $166,420,000.
Tron took first place this weekend, making $43.6m and Yogi Bear came in second with $16.7m.

If you consider mathematics and reason to be "a rather silly and blanket(ed) statement", then, you're absolutely correct: my position is baseless. Will I find many people to agree with me? On this site? Of course not. Most of you cannot distance yourselves emotionally from the books to rationally and objectively evaluate the content, quality, or financial prospects of the films. It makes for an amusing read, but it's not so great for reasoned debate.
Furthermore, "typical estimates usually just double the budget, not triple it"? Oh, really? Says who? The multiplier is on a SLIDING SCALE. There is no definitive number when you just add up the domestic and international grosses. It DEPENDS. What's the most influential variable to affect this number? Domestic gross in the first three weekends. The lower that number, the higher the multiplier. At this point, Tribunal is a lot closer than you want to give him credit for. The overall international gross means next to nothing in comparison to what the studios need to make at home for the first three weekends.
Lastly, please don't confuse my position that the film can no longer break even in its theatrical run with: "The film will not be profitable in the long-run.", "I want the film to fail." or "I don't want another Narnia film." I have never said anything remotely like that. I believe the film MAY turn a profit, but in 5-10 years. That has NOTHING to do with what I said. It will NOT break even at the box office. Impossible. Don't shoot the messenger, look at the numbers.
I have never wanted the film to fail. I wouldn't have driven 50 km on black ice in a blizzard to see it on opening night if I wanted it to fail. It IS failing. It DESERVES to fail. You guys like it? Great. I want something a lot better. Do I want more films? I want a better product, and I would like us, as fans, to have higher standards, and to hold the producers accountable for when they deliver shockingly mediocre content like this film. But you guys are the "real" fans, right?

I know that LWW is the most famous of the series, but I wonder why the movie people didn't start from the beginning? From MN??? Then, it wouldn introduce the series, and the next movie to be made would be the most famous one, to build momentum. I suppose if they had to, they could skip HHB, and move to the others after that, and that way we'd at least get six of them…and then they could go back and finish with HHB??? Just an idea…maybe the next time around. 🙂
Don't we just love to speculate! We have so many ideas of how the films could have been made better, but if it came to actually making the movies ourselves we would be lost. 🙂 It makes me think of those men in the family that are always shouting at the TV in a football game telling the players and coaches what they should do… 🙂
I haven"t seen the movie yet, but I am dying too. How much does it cost to get into a movie theater ? Ah Well, From the trailers and commercials I can"t wait to see it !!
I'm seeing it again (I'm pretty sure) next week. 3D tickets are about $8-ish and regular ones go from $5-$7 were I live.

Wow !!!! I"m so happy your getting to see it again !!! What is it like ? Have you seen it in 3D or Regular ? Which do you recomend ?
I saw it in 3D but I would reccomend the 2D version. During the non 3D scenes I took the glasses off and the colors were a lot brighter and you seem to focus more on the movie without the glasses. And it would be cheaper too. AND there were only about 2 full 3D scenes, so I would just go for the 2D which is what I'm doing next week 🙂

While I liked Dawn Treader quite a bit, I was disappointed in two things. First, the musical score. Why could they have not kept the majestic, thrilling score of the first two movies? To me, it was synonymous with Narnia, like the scores/themes for movies like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter, Superman, etc. They did, however, give a nod to it near the beginning where the melody played briefly on a shot of the ship, but they should have used the score throughout to give it the grand feel of the first two movies. Music goes a long way for a movie. My second comment is that the film just didn't have the grandeur of the first two – the music again has something to do with it, but also the flow and the editing of it seemed a bit off. On the positive side, I liked how they were faithful to the book in a lot of the key parts/messages, and they did a great job casting Eustace and some of the support players. Of course, the main stars are spot on still! The change in Reepicheep's voice seems to also have affected the way his character was played – not as feisty/aggressive as PC .. but maybe because he's a bit older/wiser! I'll go see it again some time soon to reevaluate it. Keep in mind I am being picky – I loved the movie and it's a zillion times better than most of the garbage that comes out of Hollywood.

MN may come first chronologically, but it's not the beginning of the narrative. It's a prequel. Several aspects of MN would lack meaning, context or interest if you hadn't read LWW first.
I read the books almost every night. I started this since I saw PC in the theatre. Once I finish the series, I start again.

'Dawn Treader' was my favourite too – absolutely loved it! It was so magical and inspiring! Having said that, I did enjoy the other two as well…
I disagree with you Darren, with all do respect, I think that the VDT score is brilliant. The reason they changed the themes is because David Arnold wanted his own turn to make up themes. I love all the real Narnian themes. I really wish they used the wardrobe theme when the snow started falling in the Magician house. I do agree with the statement about garbage from Hollywood though!
I ment if one of the movies is a huge plop. Not the books. The books are great.

yep. I think the "anti-muslim" impression a lot of folk seem to have gathered from the Calormenes could be due simply to their robes, politics, and landscape. Tash-ism in no way resembles any of the forms of the muslim religion that I've ever heard of. It wouldn't be too difficult to portray the Calormenes in such a way that noone even slightly informed would see them as a metaphor for Muslims.

My personal reason for why VoTD hasn't done so well is because there is too much time between movies. If you look at the Harry Potter and Transformers franchises, they make the next movie somewhere between one and two years apart. We've only had 3 Narnia movies since 2003. That is way too much time between films. Another reason is probably because the LWW was the most popular book, but since the entire 7 books have sold so well, there should be enough fans out there to keep the box office numbers up, not to mention new fans that the movies should have picked up…those who never read the books or are hearing about this franchise for the first time. I dont' think it has anything to do with the spiritual message either since LWW has the strongest and most obvious Gospel message and it did exceedingly well. It's hard to adapt a movie from children's books unless there is a lot of supernatural or violence. Narnia doesn't have enough of either to keep young people's interest, of which I'm glad and shouldn't have to compromise just to make a smash movie. I say several Christian production companies get behind Walden Media for the next movies and make them a year or two apart, not three to four years apart.

I wish they didn't dilly dally with greenlighting Prince Caspian (as well as deviating from the story)
Just saw Voyage of the Dawn Treader yesterday and absolutely loved it! It was definitely different from the first two – style, pace, etc. but it was still very good. I saw it in 3D as it was the only format showing in our theaters. The dialogue was a bit choppy and dry in the beginning but it soon picked up pace. While the movie's storyline re-arranged some adventures, I thought the overall storytelling was still very good. The most touching scene for me came at the end, when Lucy and Edmund were told that they were not returning to Narnia. The last scene in the bedroom was the moist poignant of all three Narnia films, so far. The look on Edmund's face as he realized he had grown up and Lucy's heartbroken look that she will not see Narnia again really tugged at my heartstrings. Overall, it was a great adventure film and it was nice to see Lucy and Edmund grown up. I am hoping that they make the rest of the movie.
The only thing that was puzzling to me is Caspian's accent. In Prince Caspian, he had a "mediterranean" accent. In Dawn Treader, Caspian had an English accent. I wonder why?
Just adding to my first post – watching the film in 3D definitely made it look beautiful. While there weren't a lot of the usual 3-D gimmicks, 3D gave the scenes depths of field that just made the whole film look enchanting. Even watching the end credits, with Pauline Baynes' illustrations in 3D was a delight!
VODT definitely had a lot of heart and lessons to tell and I think it was successful in doing that, even if some of the book's deeply thematic elements were shortened in the film.

Some good(ish?) news on the money front. From early on, Box Office Mojo has been comparing Dawn Treader to the noted fantasy-flop The Golden Compass. But Dawn Treader seems to have stronger legs. By the end of this week (week 3) VDT's domestic gross should pull ahead of GC's final domestic gross for it's entire 7 week run.
Also, movies' weekend earnings usually go up New Years Weekend. This happened with LWW, GC and Eragon. So VDT should pull ahead of Eragon as well. Maybe it will do much better by the end, enough for people to start comparing it to Caspian? Here's hoping. 🙂

Personally, I'm worried about the rumors indicating that there will be no Silver Chair up in the big screen. I have enjoyed watching the series so far, hoping to watch more. Unlike most Disney movies this one doesn't make me scrunch up or snore at all the sugar-like quotations. Plus, the action just makes it more fun to watch. Although like another person somewhere here said, it takes way too long to produce one installment after the other. Which can cause the depletion of interested viewers.
I just hope Silver Chair won't take long. More on to I hope it will actually produce a trailer.
No, concrete plans for Dawn Treader were already underway. Disney was planning to make most or all of the series at the time.
Then, PC proved to be a bad investment and Disney dropped the series altogether. When Fox took over, they decided to green light the movies one by one, based on the success of the series.
