I think it has been rather a disappointment here in the U.S., but in other countries it is doing amazing. Too bad it isn't as popular here. I hope it's enough to make SC, and SOON.

  2. Gem says:

Just remember, there are at least 25 other countries where VDT is the top movie right now and will be for a while. Besides, we still have Christmas Eve and Day and the days afterwards too. VDT will definitely get more money and attention then. I think we still have solid hope for them making SC.

@Edward – good on you, and this time take a whole lotta people with you! (I have taken two groups of 10 already)

    i think this is good

  6. Hmm, that's very interesting, I don't think I've ever heard anyone say they didn't like LB for those reasons…
But I'm afraid I'd have to respectfully strongly disagree with you there! I thought LB was the perfect ending to the series, telling you everything you needed to know, but still leaving a few ends untied for you to perhaps decide for yourself what happened (for example, what happened to Susan). I don't know about everyone else, but I like having all the ends tied up at the end of a story! I think that LB is probably the best last book of a series I have ever read.
And there's also the inclusion of strong allegory in the story, which I thought was very well done (the dwarfs were my favourite part of it- they were so frustrating and you can really see how it relates even today).
I understand what you said about massive death, but that could perhaps also be part of the allegory?
But yeah, how'd we all get onto LB anyway? *laughs*

  7. Wow, you are absolutely right! After reading this I feel so much better! Thanks, Alambil and Tarvis!

  8. Princess Lucy says:

lol i know!!!!..how did we get to LB…hmmm…anyways yes ur right Ionic Bonding Rocks about the last book of the narnia series…and i love how(spoilers for those who didn't read this book) the adventures that was happening to tirin and with ginger the cat, the donkey and his friend..its cool and to show the ending of narnia was nice with peter closing the door…that was cool hehehehe….but i guess we are just shocked by the very end with the deaths of all the seven kids except susan as they are young and its in the series where lots of children read so yh…lol i just read these series around a year ago so hopefully as the years pass i will get used to the very end of it and i am sure the same for everyone else who was shocked too…oh i really hope they make all the books..that will be a dream come true for all of us hehe.

  9. Anhun says:

Nothing quite conveys the spirit of Easter like Pirates of the Caribbean! ๐Ÿ˜›

  10. Anhun says:

@Ionic, while I like loose ends because they leave room for your imagination, my main problem wasn't even that the book ties them up, but that it doesn't do much of anything else. It relies too heavily on the other books for interest. You can read SC or HHB without reading any of the other books, and the plot and characters are still interesting and engaging. VDT as well, although you might get a bit confused without the PC back story. I just think it would be a waste of time making or watching the movie.

  11. Sr.V says:

Philip hated both Narnia, that by this fact to him, Tolkien and Lewis were
great friends … Ridiculous compared to what you do "The gold compass and Narnia.

  12. Sr.V says:

    We Can save Nรกrnia!

    Please,lets go in the theater!

  13. TrueNarnianWithWill says:

Does that mean VDT is doing badly or well in Cinemas? Confuzzzled much ! I really hope they can do al of the books in to movies ! I <3 NARNIA!!

  14. onedayit'llbeme says:

Lol I so agree! I always felt just a tiny bit sorry about what happened to Susan though – I mean shes left with no family seeing as her parents and all her siblings died as well! She could have at least gone to the 'real England' with her parents. but other than that I definitely feel it was a brilliant ending to the series! I hope they do make it into a movie eventually – I so needed that reunion scene after the end of VDT in the cinema!

  15. Princess Lucy says:

POOR SUSAN!!!….she would be lonely and terrified when finding out the situation with all her siblings death…and she would never get over it so it would be something thats always in her mind…and wouldn't lucy, peter and edmund miss her…so thats another sad bit…these endings with death and sadness doesn't necessarily reck the series but its sooo sad…so yes i totally agree with u there hehehe….but like u said i hope they make this book into a film so we feel better and see the reunion especially when we just seen the emotional bit in VDT!!!

  16. Pepper Darcy says:

this isn't so bad! ๐Ÿ™‚ School got out for a *lot* of people Friday, so maybe the box office will do even better! If we can get a SC and LB I'll be happy.

And after what Apted said about continuity of characters being what is needed, and the way VotDT has 'done' (good but not really great) it might be really good if they at least did LB (for the sake of viewers seeing Jill/Eustace) and *then* did MN and HaHB, because the *main* characters in that are new ones (Shasta, Aravis, Polly, Digory). Sure there's Aslan and the Witch in MN, but if you went from SC to MN or HaHB, people are going to be saying 'what did you just DO? Where's Eustace and Jill?!'

Switching from finishing up SC to MN/HaHB instead of LB might kill the series. As much as I'd *LOVE* to see MN and HaHB as movies, I'd be so happy even if it was JUST SC and LB. At least with LB you have the happy ending of Narnia and you *know* that MN and HHB happened! ๐Ÿ™‚

Just thought of something, HHB will be 'unique' for Narnia as in the fact that it begins with a child in Narnia and the story ends in Narnia– no new kid/or pevensies coming to Narnia and leaving! ๐Ÿ™‚

  17. Reepicheep says:

Here are some of the reasons why VDT isn't making as much money as it should be.

*The marketing. It was way too under marketed until very recently.
*Critics. Despite an excellent word of mouth from fans and early reviewers, critics haven't been kind; as they've been saying things like it doesn't have enough magic, it's too convoluted and is too much of a fable. None of which is true.
*The 3D. I my eyes, the film's only flaw. But this shouldn't stop people from seeing it in 2D.

They still need to make SC because they did such a good job with this one and SC is much more marketable than this one. These problems can be perfected next time.

  18. Queen Su says:

How can Tron make more money opening weekend than a classic like Narnia?

  19. Sol says:

Im from Argentina and my daughter and I can't wait until the opening on the 28th!! Hope it does well here ๐Ÿ™‚

  20. blueRain says:

Looks like it's been a bad few weeks for every movie release–not just Narnia.

  21. Not Of This World says:

I have faith Dougles Gresham will push his hardest to make all the movies. And unless one is a huge, huge, huge plop (if you know what I mean), I think we'll see all seven movies.

  22. Thyservant says:

'Once a king or queen of Narnia, always a king or queen.' Susan will see her brothers and sisters again but not through the world of Narnia. Perhaps they can have Neeson as a vicar at the end of LB to come close to say a few 'meaningful' words with Susan by the tombs. Just my own ideas anyway…

  23. Jonathan says:

I sincerely hope a fourth Narnia gets made. After receiving news this week that one of my favorite TV shows, Stargate Universe (completely different than Narnia I know) – I love Stargate – was canceled the last thing I want to hear is that there will be no more movies…

  24. Demor says:

idk I mean I get what you are saying but out of any of the books, the one I want to see made is HHB because that is the one that led me to Christ as a teenager and still no adaption has been made of it. I mean SC should be next because of the continue of characters but I just hope HHB gets made. It is one of the best of the series I think.

  25. Narnia's #1 Fan! says:

Thanks Daniel for giving me hope!!! I loved Dawn Treader far more than the others, it made me love the characters more than ever!!! Silver Chair and Last Battle her we come!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  26. High Queene Shelly Belly says:

so many critics bring an anti-christian agenda to the review it's impossible for VDT to get a fair shake. I'd say it boils down to : it's a wonderful film to bring your family to, the book is deeper and more spiritual, and the film, on a technical level, suffers from surprisingly amaturish production values (not unforgiveable to the average viewer, though. -but surprising considering the director's credentials). PS- what kind of music does tron use? i venture to quess "industrial" music-

  27. samuel says:

Yes Daniel James, Tron Legacy is a sequal in the true sense of the word the story follows how Flynn has now been trapped in the world of tron all these years and how his son comes to find him.

but I can believe that Tron 3 has been planned. Disney is one of the most sequel hungry studios around, I think that's why they had pixar open up "Pixar: Canada" to make sequels unfortunately.

Af far as SC goes, there is another reason that it might continue with the series, and the key words are "DVD box set." These days the DVD sales often make more money than than the box office and if Fox can swing a distribution deal with disney than they could make gold with a box set release of all 7 books!

  28. Annabeth says:

i hope you and your daughter like the movie, i really enjoyed it. I have family in Argentina ๐Ÿ˜€

  29. High Queene Shelly Belly says:

I'm NOT amazed a the overseas totals, they had a proper advertising campaign. What I AM amazed about is how they shafted the US promo campaign- it was abysmal! how did they expect it to revive the series with no talk show interviews, no magazine coverage, no happy meals, no posters, no buttons,no toys , no bus ads, limited billboards, etc. It only had the awareness of an indie pic. Who made this decision that america doesn't love narnia? esp. how we supported the 1st flick, and the butchered 2nd flick?

  30. samuel says:

I read one review and stopped, it was such a confused review, basically bashing CS Lewis and his books and praising the movie as just a "kids movie" "for 10 years olds" and yet giving the movie 4 stars and saying that "you should go see it." I'd say the mood was almost passive-aggressive, and really didn't make sense at all.

  31. samuel says:

and I'm sure that yogi bear will probably do worse in its second weekend. I know some friends who are planning to see VOTD on Christmas day, because their work schedules clash on most days of the week

  32. onedayit'llbeme says:

Lol Thyservant, thats how I always reassured myself after reading LB! One day perhaps Susan will see them again.
Wow Princess Lucy you just made it all the worse for me by empathizing with like that! Lol, and again after seeing the last scene in VDT, they'd better make LB!

  33. High Queene Shelly Belly says:

The Last Battle is mindblowing if u really understand what it is an analogy for. Read the Book of Apocalypse in the bible ( aka Book of Revelation) and a commentary to help decipher it, then read TLB again, and it will be stirring and thrilling for you. Also if you study current events and how the bible prophecies are being fufilled (check out teacher Jack Van impe's tv show and website for starters) you'll be amazed at CS LEwis's story and his predictions for our future are playing out right now.

  34. narnian21 says:

I thought about that myself but I don't think it would work too well. Because there are characters in MN and HHB (I think?) that appear in LB. And if I remember right don't eustace and Jill go to narnia because of the magical rings from MN? Since that wasn't established yet you'll have the filmmakers changing the story and we don't want that happening. I think they could sell MN really easily since it's the beginning of narnia and they have the white witch used in the RIGHT way. HHB maybe easy since it has the pevensie kids in it. I think SC should be made if they get enough money cuz in my opinion the best stories are yet to come and really enjoyable. And they should be easy to adapt. Or at least you'd hope anyways. Further up and further in!

  35. Dancinginrain says:

What I really hate is that my brother(he hasn't read the books ๐Ÿ™ ) He said that there was no point to for them coming back(and yes truthfully He IS a Christian). and it wasn't entertaining. I'm the opposite of His reactions. I'm just upset with Him though! I can't help that he didnt like it. My Dad liked it. But My Dad thought Eustace was a little bit of another 'Edmund'. (and to point out noone in my family other than me and my sister has read the books.)My Mom also liked it and sister did too. My friend (who also hasn't read the books) gave it an 15.5, when I said out of 10! About almost everyone is split about this movie! I am hoping that SC will get made and hopefully it will make it in the boxoffice too. Hopefully VDT will get more and more money for silver chair and everyone will *love* it:)

  36. narnian21 says:

I thought about that myself but I don't think it woul

  37. Aunt Letty says:

Ironically, the very uniqueness of HB may prevent it from getting onto film. I'm just speculating, of course, but it fits what I see as the logic of current filmmaking aesthetics, to reject HB because it is so different from the story that's been built up onscreen so far.

I hope that isn't what happens, and I called it ironic because, to me, HB looks like the book that most readily lends itself to a neat, tidy, film adaptation. Even the allegory in HB seems to me like the sort that would be most palatable to film industry writers and easiest to portray in a film. The basic plot is all action-driven. In fact, I think the changes that would get made to HB would likely be more in the form of expanding and embellishing what's already on the page, than any changes to plot or character. HB is just waiting to be plopped into a screenplay and brought to life.

LB would be a bit more problematic, and MN even more so. If folks here objected in advance to the shifts in VDT's plot, wait 'til movieland goes to work on reshaping MN into a workable screenplay…

Still haven't seen VDT the film. Waiting for the kids to get out of school so we can do a matinee (cheaper). Maybe other families are in the same mode.

I'm surprised I haven't seen much commentary/reactions on this site, from those who've seen the film so far. Is it a spoiler thing, or is there not much to say, or what?

  38. MinotaurforAslan says:

Because Disney spent more on advertising,

  39. Aslan's Girl says:

Dear Lord, please save Narnia if that's your will! Everybody, pray! If the Lord doesn't want it to do well, it won't. (I really hope it's His will that SC is made, but I trust Him to do whatever is best) Remember Luke 11:9-"Ask, and it shall be given to you…"

    My thoughts on VDT money:
Fox has reason to make Silver Chair, and it has reason not to. I think the question now is how much more money VDT will make. I mean, in the movie, we've got strong indication toward a sequel, because Aslan tells Eustace that Narnia "may have need of him yet" or something like that. And we also have Aunt Alberta say "Eustace, Jill wants to see you, she's downstairs" I know that wasn't verbatim but yall know what I mean ๐Ÿ™‚ Anyway, because we have some things like these lines that leave audiences wondering about later movies, I think this poses a good opportunity for Fox. On the other hand, it sounds like the profits of the movie are wanting. There are different opinions, but I think for the most part, we wish VDT had made more money. Whether the amount made is going to be enough to convince Fox to make SC is in dispute… I, personally, am encouraged by the second weekend's profits, although I wish they were higher. And I do believe after Christmas stress settles and people get bored, the movie's audience will get larger.

Also, my friends, family, and I contributed 90$ to the movie's earnings!! ๐Ÿ™‚ And I would encourage you all to see it a second time; I very much enjoyed it the second time, and noticed new things about it that I hadn't seen before.

Long live Narnia! Long live Aslan!

  40. Tribunal says:

Funny you mention the DVD sales since the disappointing DVD sales of Prince Caspian was the last straw for Disney and they dropped the franchise.

With a lower box-office for Dawn Treader, one can only expect lower DVD sales..

  41. Carwashboy says:

I totally agree with you! I really believe that this series (at least the first three films that HAVE been made) were part of God's plan! I mean, the story of the boy who committed his life to Christ after watching Prince Caspian – that's just AMAZING! God will use these films for His glory and the advancement of His kingdom, and HE HAS!! That's yet another miracle! I really think we have a shot at seeing Silver Chair – Gresham will probably push for it, the production team is awesome, and Fox has already showed that they are awesome by stepping in after Disney dropped out. If it's God's will, then it'll happen! If it isn't, then we have to realize it's for a reason. But it would be AMAZING to see Silver Chair! I see all of these reviews that say something along the lines of "looks like this may be the last trip to Narnia" etc., and when I see that, I just think that quotes like that really don't display any kind of faith. We have to have faith that, whatever happens, its the right thing!

  42. Not Of This World says:

    Beautifly writen! I agree!

  43. Timo says:

    Is your brother God?

  44. Braden Woodburn says:

OMG YAYY!!! That is definately far off over it's budget at $140-$150 million. I mean dannnng, $166,420,000 WORLDWIDE is in my eyes a big hit and it's only been out in the US for 10 days now which I think that is where most of the money came from. Can anyone tell me if that means that this movie pulled it off to continue on? In my gut instinct it's saying YYEESSS! Narnia foreverrrr!

  45. Gem says:

Whoa, hold on. We still have HHB and MN to go before LB, and if SC doesn't do as good as PC at least, we won't see any of the three.

  46. Queen Elizabeth says:

I LOVE your idea Thyservant. Neeson as a consoling friend could represent "Aslan known by another name" like God's spirit coming on Earth to confort her. It is sad, but yet a happy ending cause they all go to Aslan's country (aka heaven) and get to see Mr. Tumus again! It would be sweet if they were all reunited with Reepicheep and everyone ๐Ÿ™‚ And the perfect ending would be then walking into Aslan's country in a burst of light, and then the Susan thing after the THE END. Like the last word, or at the end of LWW when the perfessor see's Lucy trying to get back through the Wardrobe.

  47. Non-Negotiable Comment says:

FOX/Walden's take of that $166,420,000 is, roughly $50 million. About $30 million from domestic sales, and $20 million from foreign (after deducting foreign marketing costs). Yes, the foreign sales look good on paper, until you realize how little of it they actually get. There is zero chance that the film will break even during its theatrical run.

  48. stephanie says:

Im 26 and I consider the original tron to be a classic in the vein of logans run. so both are good to me

  49. Queen Elizabeth says:

Do they not know how many fans there are?! PLEASE MAKE SILVER CHAIR!!!!! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  50. narnian21 says:

I still have faith that things can turn around. there is already a huge international gross and there are still countries in which the movie hasn't even been released yet. and its almost Christmas and new year's so i'm not giving up without a fight

  51. Anhun says:

I don't think I agree with you on Tron not being competition. Both are considered special effects adventures. Some of VDT's potential audience might have wanted to see it for that reason, rather than family fun. I know some people saw LWW for the effects.

  52. Moviecynic says:

I have a question for our UK friends. The movie is doing well in Mexico, Spain, Russia, South Korea, and France among others โ€“ but it is falling like a rock in the UK.

What happened? Didnโ€™t the first film even beat Harry Potter that year? I canโ€™t imagine why the UK hasnโ€™t sold at least two or three times as many tickets yet.

I LOVED this film. One of my favorite ever. Sure it could have been better but I am so glad it was made.

Letโ€™s hope we get to see The Silver Chair!

  53. nic says:

Really good to be number 1 ROW over weekend when Tron released. There are different types of marketing & i don't think Tron for example has only 50 million more of marketing than Narnia. One of the most effective types of marketing will be that which isn't so obvious, & while Narnia will have a good word of mouth kind, that is only one of the over-laps of this kind, there are other kinds as well which a film like Tron for example, does seem to be leagues ahead with.

I wouldn't even know if the Narnia franchise is on par with a film like Clash of the Titans on this score in relation to this aspect of the movie industry & event movies. But if this wasn't the case then the Narnia films wouldn't be so distinctly Narnian, so it's perfectly fine that this is the situation. I don't know, but it seems that there is lots of audience potential for the whole franchise to continue on in similar 'waters' though enjoying great commercial success. The marketing just has to maximise the strengths of it's Narnian situation more & not invest so much in a more traditional movie industry event vibe which does not really seem to work as well with gaining it's audience, or in comparison to other films that are better suited in an over-lapped marketed type of way for that approach.

For the Narnia chronicles to be all made in the fine fashion they have been so far, it's going to be a really new mix of an audience type that solidifies & carries it through over their run at the cinema. Many people who 'all' like Narnia will have wildly diff. tastes for most other films, all over the map!

  54. Anhun says:

lol, the capitalization had me scratching my head too. I think he was trying to be emphatic.

  55. Moviecynic says:

I'm 42 so I saw the first Tron when it came out. This one is MUCH better. I enjoyed it for what it was. What it was, however, was not a match for VOTDT!

VOTDT is an odd film – it is flawed, yet one of my favorite movies in a long time. Well worth the wait.

  56. Thyservant says:

To Queen Elizabeth, thanks very much. That's what I'm thinking about. Also we can add the scene of Aslan showing his true form as Jesus Christ. However, not in a 'direct' way but expressed through the shadow or something else on the children when they are in the Garden…

  57. Tribunal says:

    Pretty much this.

In order for films to turn a profit they really have to gross triple the amount of money that was spent on making and marketing it. So unless Dawn Treader makes +$600 million worldwide don't expect The Silver Chair.

  58. Queen Elizabeth says:

Yea I get what you mean. To keep it symbolic and it would be weird to show Jesus/Aslan in like person form. Maybe it would be cool to show like an up close of Aslan's face with like Jesus' face like in it you know? Like his eyes and showing like an overlay of Jesus in Aslans face. I don't know something like that would be cool, and the kids could just be in awe.

  59. Queen Elizabeth says:

(to Thyservant) my comment back to you I accidentally posted it up father so look for it ๐Ÿ™‚

  60. But the problem is, in the reunion at the end of LB, it mentions Shasta and Aravis. Digory and Polly are major characters. It takes away some of the significance of the professor being Digory. and everyone else would be like "Calormenes? Who are the Calormenes? What are they doing here? Tisroc? Who's the Tisroc? Western garden? WHAT?!?!?!?!"
