Ambiguity Surrounding Voyage’s Title Track

Several sources have reported that Carrie Underwood will be performing a song entitled “There’s a Place for us,” for The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader; however, it now seems as if this fact is in dispute.  According to digitalspy.com, a British singer named Joe McEldery has just finished recording “There’s a Place for Us,” and is also reporting that his rendition will be the “title track” for the upcoming film.

“McElderry, whose debut album Wide Awake entered the UK charts at No. 3 last Sunday, has recorded the song ‘There’s A Place For Us’ for the film.  The track heads the latest instalment of the movie franchise, called The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, which arrives in cinemas next month”
The X Factor champ will give an exclusive performance of the song and his new single, ‘Someone Wake Me Up’, at the switching-on of the Narnia-themed Christmas lights on London’s Regent Street on November 9.

One possible explanation is that Carrie Underwood’s version will be on the soundtrack and Joe McEldery’s version will be in the movie credits.

  1. Litus says:

I read in Yahoo last day that there will be in fact different rendition of the songs by country as Carrie said in the interview I'll post the link when I find it again.

  2. Caspian says:

Strange…what if they sing it together?

  3. Bother Eustace says:

    Huh, weird.

  4. Litus says:

Here's a quote from the news same as previously reported here "International cover versions of Underwood’s song will be recorded overseas in a small number of select countries, broadening the impact of this worldwide release." maybe this is it, hahaha

  5. NarniaQueen411 says:

Is it possible (like Litus says) that Carrie is singing the 'American Version' and Joe is singing the UK Version?
Either way, I cant wait to hear it (personally though, I like Carrie Underwood music better).

  6. King_Cor_the_Great says:

I think that Carrie's is going to be for the American viewers as we are more familiar with her. This guy's is probably for the British/Spain/Italian/French viewers.

  7. Starlily says:

Well…I don't really care much either way. I usually don't pay much attention to credit songs, unless I really really like them. So whatever happens is fine with me–though I kind of wish they'd chosen a different kind of song.

  8. Pepper Darcy says:

uh… i don't get it. But if it saves us from that awful song… I'm so glad! 😀

  9. DamselJillPole says:

No offense but that would be very stupid if they did that. USA and UK are both English speaking countries.

  10. DamselJillPole says:

    ^ That would be stupid!

  11. checkers says:

    I'm so confused!!!! *sniffles* 😛

  12. wolfloversk says:

Ok- I can see us having conflicting spoilers about the plot, but this?!

  13. wolfloversk says:

The only two things I can figure are that there are 2 different versions, or else it's a duet. Not unless they're two different songs with the same title…

  14. King_Cor_the_Great says:

yes it does seem stupid, but look at the world. even more stupid things are happening.

  15. King_Cor_the_Great says:

    what awful song?

  16. SnowingRoses says:

    It's not awful!
*Prepares to slap Pepper silly* :-p 🙂
Anyway, desite any differences of opinion on that other song, I think Litus may be correct. Carrie is more popular in the USA, I'm guessing- and I know for an almost fact this Joe person is much more well known over in England.
    Remember that word- PUBLCITY?

  17. wolfloversk says:

Good point King_Cor_the_Great, the world is filled with strange things…

  18. Eavis says:

Oh, this could be good. I'm not a huge fan of Carrie Underwood, though I realize she has a great voice. And I liked the song…

  19. DamselJillPole says:

Okay so i'm not familiar with The Beatles, Sting, Depeche Mode, Imogen Heap, etc. Yet i know them and i'm American!!!!!! I know the world has it's weird problems and it always has. But that just sounds stupid, it's music and the same song for goodness sake.

  20. Bookwyrm says:

LOL! Something we can finally agree on, Pepper.

  21. Pepper Darcy says:

he, he! 🙂 Yes, at last we agree, though I *do* respect your opinion and views on the movie =)

Though I just about melted seeing the other comments… oh. dear. I can't *like* the movie without making some people mad (not you, Bookworm, I saw you defend my comment on the adaption once, and I thank you for it! Especially since I know you probably disagreed, but it was very kind of you) and I can't dislike the song without having people on my back. As Enya puts it: 'anywhere is…'

Oh well, it's just a credit song I guess. Maybe the soundtrack will outstrip it for greatness then! 🙂

  22. Bookwyrm says:

No problem, Pepper. 🙂 I try to keep the people being brats in check on here, even if they're on my "side".

Definitely agree with what you've said about it being cool if they had gotten Enya to do a credits song. She's very talented and fits a lot better with Narnia than random pop/country.

  23. SnowingRoses says:

Sometimes my sense of humor is sort of mean. 🙁 Don't mind it, Pepper. You can have your own opinion.

  24. JProctor says:

I do have to say this new singer is definitely cute

  25. Queen Su says:

My thoughts exactly, but that would be too strange. I don't care who sings it to be honest.

  26. Andreya of Narnia says:

DamselJillPole, could you perhaps state your opinion in a more polite way next time? No offense, but I find it rude when someone calls something I said or like "Stupid". Maybe you could say "Interesting thought, but I personally think differently about it." 🙂

  27. Andreya of Narnia says:

Ack! Put this in the wrong place… >.<

  28. narnian1 says:

"One possible explanation is that Carrie Underwood’s version will be on the soundtrack and Joe McEldery’s version will be in the movie credits."

I hope this is not the case, the same version that's in the credits is the same one I want on the soundtrack. Also, I don't want two different people singing it- unless it's a duet. But one for America and another for international? Please, there's no need for that either! If that were the case, I would still want both singers' version of the song. Unless she just wrote it and he's performing, (and earlier reports were confused about that)?

  29. DanielmyBrother says:

Maybe The song is song by the guy at the beginning of the movie and Carrie sings at the end credits. I know some movies that have done that. I just read that Carrie saw a cut of the movie and said people will be blown away by what they see. So I think the movie makers contacted her about the song. I don't know anything could happen.

  30. TrueNarnianWithWill says:

I prefer Carries music to Joes…. argh! I wanted carrie to sing it not joe!!!!!! 🙁

  31. K says:

umm Considering Carrie wrote the song and she is an American Country Music superstar, i would definatley choose her version!!! In my opinion it is dumb to have someone other than her sing it since her vocals will obviously over shadow anything this kid could do!!!

  32. AJAiken says:

Given that Joe won X Factor last year (the British equivalent of American Idol) I'd say this made lots of sense. The production's actually going to deserve that British tax break this time …

  33. Trek44 says:

    YEAH BABY!!!!! BRITS FOREVER!!!!

  34. Lirenel says:

Maybe this means the song won't flow into the movie, like 'The Call' in PC! If they're changing the singer depending on the country, it wouldn't make sense for it to be part of the movie.

  35. narnian resident says:

he had better sound really good then, because he's got alot to live up for with me. the music is always one of the most important aspects of a movie for me, especially the credit music.

  36. Don says:

Who is this guy?? And why would they have him sing the song?
    Makes no sense.

  37. Not Of This World says:

I have not heard of this guy either.

  38. Cynical Narnia Fanboy says:

He won X factor, which is kinda like american idol for britain, i believe

  39. Cynical Narnia Fanboy says:

How do you know it's awful???
I personally beleive that Carrie underwood is a very talented singer…

  40. David Sutton says:

This article is not accurate. This is a rumor. I have seen the film and Carrie's version is in the end credits.

  41. I can't stand a mystery. December is taking way too long! I wish all the versions of the song were out already, so we could *analyze* them.

  42. Bookwyrm says:

Some European boy band performed it. You can find it on YouTube. Very cheesy, cliched lyrics and the guys sound awful.

  43. Bookwyrm says:

Wow, that's incredibly rude. Have you even ever heard anything he sings before?

  44. Cynical Narnia Fanboy says:

ugh…you're right…don't think even Carrie Undrewood could salvage it

  45. Yeah–why has nobody considered that it could be a duet? 😛

  46. Aslan's Country says:

If this is true, I will be happy. I'm probably one of the only people that actually knows this guy, but his voice is amazing. Go watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j93WvstotJ4 or another one of his performances on X Factor. I'm not too keen on what they've done with his CD, but if it really is Joe, it'd be great. I don't have anything against Carrie Underwood, but I actually know him a bit more.

  47. Aslan's Country says:

Also, from Joe Mcelderry's official website:
"Joe was approached by Twentieth Century Fox to record the specially written track, ‘There’s a place for us’, written by American songstress Carrie Underwood, which will feature in the film released later in the year."
So maybe she wrote the song and he's singing it? That'd be weird, though.

  48. Melissa says:

He is popular in Britain. He won the show with a hugh margin of 60%. His performances are on youtube. This is audition:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rv6xnt_i-A8

And saw this as a great performance from X Factor:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j93WvstotJ4

  49. icarus says:

This seems like a very smart move to me. Having artists from different countries record their own versions of the song for the single's chart makes it much more likely the song will hit the higher reaches of the charts in each country. A song by last year's X-Factor winner would be sure to chart in the Top 10 in the UK, regardless of what the song is, and the same is probably true of certain other acts in most other European countries.

It's perhaps another example of the slightly dishonest marketing campaign that has gone on so far for this movie, but i can still imagine its the sort of thing that will prove to be very successful.

  50. Urgh! Mediocre, mainstream POP music does NOT belong in a fantasy film based on a classic, mythic book. Period! I don't care who sings this tripe. It belongs in some romantic comedy. NOT C.S. Lewis!!!

  51. Vinny says:

That is such an amazing version of the song and you really could feel the emotions. I actually got a copy of his album and its pretty amazing with his vocals. His cover of Superman is unbelievable. It's so beautiful with his voice: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrGkBH0_Yjs&feature=related

And he is releasing this song "Someone Wake Me Up" which I really love: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gnMJ7w3-doQ

It sounds like he really will do justice to this song. I look forward to hearing his version.

  52. Pepper Darcy says:

Bookworm: yeah, my sister and I were holding out for Enya ever sense we heard a new director was taking the helm! 🙂

Snowing Roses: hey, that's okay. I didn't realize you were teasing! 🙂 I have a very dear sister who teases me like that and I take it and give it back 🙂 K? Hugs!! 😀

Cynical Fanboy: yeah, I had watched the video and didn't even finish 😀

  53. Aslan's Meadow says:

That does sound like it may be right. But it seams silly to sing a American and English version. I could understand different languages…but different accents?

  54. Narnian Meerkat says:

Hm, okay. I like guys singing better. . .:)

  55. Aurora says:

Hey, we invented Pop Idol! Without it there would be no American Idol. 😛 But still … Joe McElderry? He's been off radar for so long. I would much prefer a different British singer to do the end credits. Someone like Leona Lewis (going with the X Factor theme) or Mika (I'd love to see what sort of song he'd come up with for a movie like Narnia :P).

  56. stacey says:

He really is an amazing singer – this is him 1 year ago singing live – he's even better (and hotter!) now

  57. Molly says:

Certainly is a fantastic singer. That clip takes me right back to X factor 2009, wish they would let Joe sing like that now. He'll do a good job of he Narnia song!

  58. Josie says:

Joe McElderry really has a fantastic voice here is another clip of him performing. he could sing the phone book and sound amazing. Plus he has a lovely warm personality

im from joe mcelderrys official forum, joe hαs an amazing voice http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6WJ6RjQ9sg&feature=youtube_gdata_player that is one of his tracks from his debut album singing live even though he had the flu. He is really nice and hαs such a powerful relaxin voice. He is 19 and grew up in newcastle england. He wanted to either sing or bє a paramedic.
Joe singing narnia song there is a place for us live http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJKWho2YBRA&feature=youtube_gdata_player x
