Comingsoon.net Confirms Dawn Treader Will Be in 3D

As an update to our story earlier today, Comingsoon.net contacted their sources and confirmed that a decision has been made and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader will be released in 3D.

Earlier today, a rumor started circulating the internet that 20th Century Fox will release The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader in 3D this December. ComingSoon.net has confirmed through our source that it is indeed the case.

It will be a 3D-filled holiday season, which kicks-off with DreamWorks Animation’s Megamind on Nov. 5. Disney will then release the Rapunzel film Tangled in 3D on Nov. 12, followed a week later by Warner Bros.’ Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 on Nov. 19. The other 3D release scheduled for December is Disney’s Tron Legacy on the 17th, right in between “Narnia” and “Travels.”

As far as I’m concerned, there’s really no bad news here. 3D movies have been making an immense amount of money compared to what they would have made if they had only been released in 2D, even considering that this particular movie will now cost an approximately $12mil more to make now (assuming the run time is about 2 hours). The Voyage of the Dawn Treader was shot without being planned as a 3D movie, so it’s not going to be all about the special effects. And for those of you out there that really don’t like 3D movies, nobody is forcing you to go see it in 3D; there will still be a 2D version released as well.

I don't think I will want to see the 3D version, but I might try it only because my family or whoever goes might want to see it in 3D.

  2. RuralNarniaFan says:

Alas, Google translator doesn't catch everything. 🙁

  3. i'm not particulary thrilled but it's not horrible either. i'll probably watch it in 3d and 2d

  4. Alambil and Tarvis says:

Do NOT see Avatar. It is overly political and if you're not that big into 3D movies anyway, you won't be able to ignore those undertones. Plus, the plot is incredibly weak. If you've heard the "Pocahontas with smurfs" joke, that's basically what it is. With a LOT of liberal political mush thrown in. The only thing good about the movie is the extensive amount of effects and even those, IMO, weren't enough to clear away the overbearing political message of the movie.

Alice, on the other hand, was quite an interesting take on Carroll's original stories and had a PLOT in addition to all the crazy effects. The effects add a lot of Carroll's weirdness to the story, but the film isn't just about them. And it's actually not as creepy as it may look (in comparison to Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, it is definitely not as weird).

I can not stand 3D movies. Thankfully, it will also be in 2 D.

  6. Puddleglum says:

3D? OOHH! Now my head really has reason to swim.

  7. glumPuddle says:

As far as story and characters, there was nothing in Avatar remotely original. Everything was pulled directly out of other movies. The word I'd use for the script is "lazy." Endlessly predictable. Most of the dialogue made me hang my head in shame.

The only thing new was the mind-blowing visuals. Without that, it would be a very forgettable film.

From the ground up, Avatar was made to be a fun 3D popcorn ride. I guess it is encouraging that the decision to release VDT in 3D is coming after the shoot. We know it wasn't conceived as a 3D gimmick initially.

  8. glumPuddle says:

All the numbers indicate otherwise. Avatar recently became the highest grossing film of all time, with most of that money coming from 3D showings. Alice in Wonderland was also in 3D, and did very well.

  9. narnian resident says:

well hey if it means making more money for the movie then sure, im ok with it. doesnt bother me cuz i can just still go ahead and just watch it in 2D, and if i wanna watch it in 3D then i'll do that
    🙂

  10. Shy Galadriel says:

oh, my… I'm excited! this is going to be awesome! especially as it will be a good movie anyways! oh boy!

  11. ChristProclamer says:

Hmm…I'm fine with this, as long as it pays for itself. Possibly the attraction of a 3D film will bring in more than a 2D, and since I can see it in both formats…I'm fine with the change. Sail on, VoDT, ever toward Aslan's Country!

  12. Griffle says:

Cool, I'll watch it in 3D opening day. Too bad they didn't shoot it with 3D cameras though. 😉

  13. Servant of Aslan says:

Sticking with the 2D version myself.

  14. Griffle says:

Don't forget about Alice, she's doing pretty good at the box office atm. 😉 Burton's highest grossing film to date, and that says a lot.

  15. lilims says:

I don't care I just want to watch the movie, lol 😉

  16. lucy says:

so long as there's a 2-D one, too, I'm cool. I've nothing against 3D movies, but I have a fear that I will get motion sickness (I'm quite prone to it), and it would be nice to have the option to watch VDT without puking into my popcorn.

  17. The Great and Fearless Pug says:

That will be really cool to see! I would love to see the scene that was done with the water flooding in through the picture. I may find myself holding my breath without realizing it!

  18. Keyaan says:

But look at Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland". The film was shot in the 2D format and was converted to 3D later. And the 3D usage was INCREDIBLY gimmicky.
Then again, Burton did already know it was going to be in 3D while he was filming it.

Not that I had a problem with the use of 3D in the film. It added to the whole trippy feel to the movie.

  19. carissa says:

is glad its going to be in 2d and 3d will still see it more than twice

  20. DamselJillPole says:

I'm going to see it in both 2D and 3D. I can't wait!

  21. Movie Aristotle says:

Has anyone from Narniaweb gotten official word from the production yet on whether or not VDT will be in 3D? I'd hate to get too excited one way or another until we hear directly from Fox or Walden.

  22. Fire Fairy says:

It sounds to me like there are two distinct opinions about this: either you hate it or you love it. It also sounds to me like a lot of the people that have something against 3D either haven't seen a 3D movie for a while or had some bad experience with it, i.e. getting a headache or something. So let me clear something up for those people. 3D movies have changed drastically in the last few years. They are no longer the dorky movies that have stuff shooting out at you to awe the audience (although a few movies still throw those tricks in once in a while). The technology has gotten a lot better, making it so that the audience feels more like they are experiencing the movie, rather than just watching it. And let me explain how 3D works. One person (I can't remember who) mentioned that when they took the glasses off, nothing looked really different. That was because the movie was not shot as a 3D movie; instead, it was converted later. A movie that is made for 3D is shot at two slightly different angles, imitating the way our eyes work. Those two different images are then superimposed on top of each other. The glasses are made so that one lense pops inward slightly, while the other pops outward, changing the way your eyes see the image. One eye will see one part of the image, while the other eye sees the other. Your brain takes care of the rest, just as it does in everyday life, making the image look 3D. If you were to take off your glasses while watching a movie shot in 3D, you will notice that the image looks slightly blurry. That is the two images at different angles put on top of each other. That is also why several people get headaches while watching 3D movies: the glasses are making their eyes focus in an unnatural and uncomfortable way.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that 3D isn't as horrible as some people think. While I'm not a big fan of cheap 3D tricks, I do love to watch a good 3D movie. For example, I saw Up! in 3D, and while they didn't throw in any cheap 3D tricks, every shot was absolutely breath-taking. There was one shot that showed hills and clouds in the distance, and I had to double check to remind myself that I was watching a movie, and not looking out an airplane window. So before you completely shoot down the possibility of watching Narnia in 3D, I would try it out first. You might find yourself blown away.

  23. Edmund-is-hot says:

    Yaaaaaaaay! 😀
I'm soo excited to go and see it! AAAAGH XD

  24. ILF says:

awsome i will probalay go see it in both 3d and 2d.

  25. Eviliini says:

So sick of the producers trying to make Narnia fit in the same box as every other movie in Hollywood. They should trust the unique storyline and feel of the books in stead of going for the new technology to get people intrested. Let's hope the movie's better in 3D..

  26. Narnia Girl says:

Hmm…interesting! I'll probably go see it both in 3D and 2D…

  27. Starlily says:

    Oh dear! Lol!

  28. Puddleglum says:

Much the same problem. Just hoping that the local theatre has the 2D option.

  29. Chris W says:

I think it's great it will be in 3D. I was actually thinking the other day it would be great to see it in 3D. I wonder if it is like Avatar 3D where it is an inwards perspective type 3D or pop out screen 3D? Can't wait. I visited the Dawn Treader here at Movie World in Australia and it was great!!

  30. Narniamiss says:

I know it'll probably do well, but I myself am not really happy with it. I know that a lot of people hate 3D, and may not bother seeing the movie at all now that it's in 3D. I'll probably just go see it both ways, though. 😀

  31. Narnianerd says:

Well there ain't no movie theater around me that shows 3D movies anyway… Its a rural area… SO I'LL GET TO SEE IT IN 2D MAHAHAHAH

  32. Eden says:

That' pretty cool! Unfortunately, my stomach can't take 3D in the theaters, so I will be going to see the 2D version. XD

  33. NarniaHannah♥(used to be celtic13 and LucyReepicheep4♥) says:

well… the good news: now maybe VDT will rake in more cash. and it might be kinda cool to have the DT pop out at you.
the bad news: the tickets will be more expensive now! And I want to see it in 2D AND 3D! but I don't hink my parents will let me. I better be pretty good from now until December….

  34. Lady Polly says:

WHY DID THEY DO IT!!! WHY!!!!

  35. yeswelovenarnia says:

YES!!!! I am very happy!!! Now even if they mess up the story (which I KNO they did!) it will still be worth it!! Hopefully my stomach can handle it. I have actually never gone to a 3D movie…..

  36. Servant of Aslan says:

While the 3D in Avatar was very good I've yet to see a 3D movie where the image doesn't look dimmer than a regular 2D movie. Guess it's the polarized glasses. My first viewing will definitely be 2D.

  37. Fluffernutter says:

I think Dawn Treader could look amazing in 3d if it's done right. I'll try to see both versions though.

  38. Anonymous Narnian says:

Yay, I'm very excited! I was hoping they'd make it 3D. This will be great, maybe it will be more like actually being in Narnia. 🙂

  39. AndreyaofNarnia says:

Which to see first? I'll probably see the 2D first, for the plot and acting, and then the 3D.
Either way, I can't wait for a trailer! Keep the story of Aslan alive!!

  40. narniamaniac says:

3D! That's fantastic! My heart leaped a meter when I saw the headline!

  41. NarniaQueen411 says:

OMG!!! this is going 2 b sooooooooo cool! – everything coming out at u, like the seaserpant…eeee!!!!! :D:D:D:D
2 bad its not in 4D (then we'd feel rain, and smell food, and stuff)
But now i am 4 sure having a trip 2 the theater w. my friends 4 my 15th birthday party (a week after the movie comes out!!! :D:D:D )

  42. Claire-ayes says:

Well. Now at least we know. I, for one, am glad about this – it seems to be the way to go for all future 'major films' & I'm glad Narnia is being classed as such. Also, I think it'll be an awesome way to see the film, as said in the last article, it won't involve any gimmicks, so I can't see a downside. Unless you happen to be a person who hates 3D. Sorry guys!

  43. Going4God says:

    I think i'll see it in 2D.

  44. KingSkandartheJust says:

Ok..that's pretty cool but going to see the 3D movies in the theater is pretty expensive…at least it is over here in NY. Well I guess that's why they like the 3D thing because it makes more money!

  45. pselpevensie says:

i don't know what to think about this. it's cool, but, to me, Narnia just isn't the 3D type. hope i'll be able to see it in 2D also.

  46. SavedByGrace says:

Same here! That's my main reason for going to see it in 2D.

  47. Waleed Sajjad Khan says:

    ok thats just AWSOME!! 😀

  48. WOW!!! That will be really neat to see!:) But…I saw one it it was grainy…I hope it isn't like that.

  49. Musgrave says:

Yes! 3D! Now I have a plan. I'll see it first in 2D (so I wont have a heart attack when I see it in 3D,) then hopefully Ill see it in 3D, and finally at a dollar theater. I saw LWW once in theaters, PC twice in theaters and now I hope I can see VDT three times on the big screen!

  50. AMD says:

OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!! this has absolutely made my day!!! Skandar in 3D!!!! That's the best Christmas present ever!

  51. Eleanor Gold says:

I like this development. I mean, VDT didn't even make it on the teaser-trailer.com list. This had BETTER be a hit or else, I know, GASP, they might not make another. They'd better get the word out. Narnia forever, ppl!!!! <3 <3 <3 <3 😀

  52. Mark Friedrich says:

Can you only see the movie in 3D?

  53. Lamppostshines! says:

YAYYY!! I knew it was going to be released in 3D so I'm pretty pleased. I'll definitely see it in 3D. No doubts bout that.

  54. Silver the Wanderer says:

Very interesting info there, Fire Fairy! I used to be one of those people who didn't like 3D movies, but, like you said, they have DEFINITELY gotten better over the years. I'm looking forward to this.

  55. Little DLF says:

OMG AWESOME!!!! I wanna see it even more now! It's like being right in Narnia!

  56. Smooshy says:

Oh brother. I'm not a fan of 3-D. It's kind of neat, I suppose but I know too many people who get motion-sickness from it or have a hard time fitting the 3D glasses over their own. Also, I really don't think it adds to the medium. I'm saying this without seeing Avatar (yes, I live under a rock, lol). I did see alice in Wonderland in 3D and I would have liked it just as much without this latest Hollywood trick.

  57. Alambil and Tarvis says:

I think people who are upset about this decision need to remember that NO ONE IS OBLIGATED to see the film in 3D. For those of us who enjoy 3D, this is awesome news. For those who hate it or could care less, then just go see it in 2D. I honestly don't see any reason to complain about this–if you don't like 3D, then DON'T SEE IT in 3D.

When movies are released in 3D, they are usually released in BOTH 2D AND 3D, so there is no need to rant about anything. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO SEE THE FILM IN 3D IF YOU DON'T WANT TO. It's that simple.

  58. Reep13 says:

    No!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
