Comingsoon.net Confirms Dawn Treader Will Be in 3D

As an update to our story earlier today, Comingsoon.net contacted their sources and confirmed that a decision has been made and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader will be released in 3D.

Earlier today, a rumor started circulating the internet that 20th Century Fox will release The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader in 3D this December. ComingSoon.net has confirmed through our source that it is indeed the case.

It will be a 3D-filled holiday season, which kicks-off with DreamWorks Animation’s Megamind on Nov. 5. Disney will then release the Rapunzel film Tangled in 3D on Nov. 12, followed a week later by Warner Bros.’ Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 on Nov. 19. The other 3D release scheduled for December is Disney’s Tron Legacy on the 17th, right in between “Narnia” and “Travels.”

As far as I’m concerned, there’s really no bad news here. 3D movies have been making an immense amount of money compared to what they would have made if they had only been released in 2D, even considering that this particular movie will now cost an approximately $12mil more to make now (assuming the run time is about 2 hours). The Voyage of the Dawn Treader was shot without being planned as a 3D movie, so it’s not going to be all about the special effects. And for those of you out there that really don’t like 3D movies, nobody is forcing you to go see it in 3D; there will still be a 2D version released as well.

Ooo…this is a perfect excuse for me to watch it twice. Once in 2-D then again in3-D

  2. narnian1 says:

    great news!

  3. Eva says:

I hope they will release both here. I could only see Avatar in 3D for example, the cinema's here only showed it in 3D..

  4. 7chronicles says:

Like I said before, I was against it, but it's not stopping me from seeing it in 2D so why should I care, I will be seeing it in 2D for my first viewing, then 3D for my second! With Tron being a 3D film coming out only a week after VDT, I think this is a very smart move by Fox, and God Willing it will get SC Green lit!

  5. glumPuddle says:

Guess I shouldn't be surprised considering Avatar recently became the highest grossing movie of all time. (That movie may have been in 3D, but that didn't stop the characters from being totally one-dimensional, stereotypical, and generally boring)

I will undoubtedly be seeing the 2D version of VDT first. That is the version Michael Apted had in his head when he was shooting. A later viewing might be in 3D.

  6. TumnusTheBrave says:

i have a question… is it playing in 2d at the theater?

  7. Tirian says:

I'm not overlay crazy about 3D, but this makes perfect sense for the marketplace. It's a no-brainer… the film is sure to gross at least $12m more with 3D than without.

  8. TumnusTheBrave says:

oh sorry nevermind i just read the end

  9. icarus says:

Well, like I said on the previous topic, i can see how alot of people might be annoyed by the studio forcing 3D onto the movie – it is not part of the director's vision, and it would only be a superficial add-on which serves no real benefit to the story.

However, like i said, i would be more worried if it were the other way round and they had designed the movie to be 3D – there would have been an undue focus on the visuals, and no doubt they would of gone out of their way to incorporate unnecessary scenes or gimmick shots, purely for the purposes of showing off the 3D effects.

At least this way, we don't need to be worried about missing out on an integral part of the movie once the film leaves cinemas after its theatrical run. The 2D version will still be the definitive version, and since that's all we are going to be able to watch at home, i'm more than happy that's the way it is.

  10. Silver the Wanderer says:

Whoa! For some reason, I had in my head that they already confirmed it wouldn't be in 3D…guess I was wrong, then. Oh well. Actually, this is perfectly fine with me. Like mentioned before, as long as it wasn't shot specifically in 3D (and full of distracting "special effects" made just for the sake of things popping out at you), I think the 3D is a good idea! If it makes more money for Narnia, I say bring it on!

Does this mean that VDT will be in IMAX?

  11. Nathan says:

I totally agree. See the 2D version first.

  12. narnia_lover127 says:

    that was my thought exactly!

  13. Ugly Pig says:

I am by no means against 3D movies in general, but I gotta ask – is there any artistic merit to this when the movie was not actually shot in 3D to begin with?

  14. Josh says:

Thankfully, my theatre doesn't release 3D movies. So 2D for me, and that they didn't make it with intent for 3D gives me some reassurance. I just hope they don't make the 4th installment purposefully for 3D and ruin it. Make them for 2D and then change them 3D and I'll be happy.

  15. Edmund P says:

I might be inclined to think that this is an APRIL FOOLS.

But if it's true, then I'm super excited!!!!

  16. Talking Rat says:

Maybe not, but with all the other movies coming out in 3D around that time, it seems like there's a definite practical reason…

  17. bkey says:

I'll still be seeing this is 2D..

  18. 22narnian says:

I am really excited about this! This should help VDT to bring in more money.

  19. Rilian says:

If I have hesitation about it, it's because it wasn't originally filmed in 3D like Avatar and therefore may not seem as seemless since they sort of have to port it over to 3D.

Why glumPuddle must continuously bash a fun movie like Avatar which had fun and entertaining characters I'll never know. It certainly taught the world how to do 3D though. I don't notice it when it's done well.

  20. THAT IS SO COOL!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🙂

  21. Oh my word why fox why. Nobody is going to see it in 3D my friends already said they wont so now I think the audience is going to not be focused on the movie they will be more focused on the visual effects I think plus it essential supposed to be a 3D movie in the firs place. All I know is that I hope it is in 2D that's what I'm going to seee

  22. Liberty Hoffman says:

I'm not really thrilled that VotDT will be in 3D, but I am relived that it was not shot for 3D so we won't be seeing any 3D moments…..

  23. Starlily says:

Hmmmmm… I really don't know what to think. I just hope they aren't spending that $12 million for nothing. I've never seen a real 3D movie, so right now I'm wondering how it will differ from the 2D. Will anything pop out at you? I can't imagine what would. Maybe the sea serpent. 😛

  24. FriendOfNarnia2 says:

So assuming the audience pays $2.00 extra for the 3-D version, how many tickets would have to be sold to compensate for the $12 million spent to convert it to 3-D? It looks like the answer is approximately 6 million. I'd say Dawn Treader can sell that many 3-D tickets.

  25. CEP Paul T says:

I will do everything possible to avoid seeing it in 3D. If that is not possible, I will certainly pass on seeing VDT. Wont lose sleep.

  26. Timo says:

I'm watching the 2D first… I saw Alice in wonderland in 3D, the glasses killed the feeling… Didnt really enjoyed the movie, it was a great movie though, but I really really hate 3D-glasses… I think I'm gonna write a song about it..

  27. Ariel_of_Narnia says:

    NOOOOOO!!!!

  28. Ariel_of_Narnia says:

Starlily, with 3D, everything looks as though you're /right there/. For example, I went on a 3D "roller coaster ride" and it really looked like I was in a roller coaster car and that it was really connecting with the tracks I saw kind of sticking out from where the screen should be (as though they really extended beyond my moving chair). (The most irritating part of the ride was that, at one point, there was this really annoying light in the top-left corner of my vision and though I tried to block it with my hand, it was still there!) So that's how 3D works.

  29. Ariel_of_Narnia says:

Yeah. And with SC being my favourite….

  30. Ariel_of_Narnia says:

lol. only one problem: it's not April 1!

  31. SavedByGrace says:

Me neither, but I hope it goes well and makes a lot of money. Personally, I like 2D better.

  32. LL says:

    YESSSSSSS!

  33. Eliseo says:

As long as the 3D conversion can pay for itself and then some then im all for it!

  34. iLiveInNarnia says:

After the feedback of Avatar–this doesn't surprise me. I will DEFINATELY see the 2D first… Apted did direct it for this so yeah. Wow this is interesting news!

  35. Susan the Gentel says:

I've never really been a fan of 3D movies so i was hoping that VDT wouldn't be 😛
Oh well at least it's not stopping me from seeing it in 2D

  36. FriendOfNarnia2 says:

Wow! You must of had some bad experiences with 3-D.

  37. Reepicheep, Knight of Narnia says:

Oh no! I'm pretty sure the theaters around here only have movies in 3D. I, for one, am not in favor of this. At least it wasn't made for 3D. Then, if I'm right about the theaters here, I can at least enjoy it as much as the other two on DVD. Not that I wouldn't enjoy it at all in the theater, but I'm watched about five seconds of a 3D movie (with the glasses on) and I got a headache. That's not very good, considering the fact that I am not prone to headaches. Oh well, I can hope for the best. Maybe I'm wrong about the theaters around here…

  38. This is an aweosme thing. Narnia again and in 3D its like a dream come true and it will be escepially exciting becuase it is Voyage of the dawn treader

  39. I just saw Alice in 3-D, and though I liked the movie, I could never completely focus on anything. Maybe it's just me?? Idk. I'll definitely be seeing this in 2-D the first time, and I'm not happy that the marketing for this is now going to be all "NARNIA IN 3-D!!!" because that bugs me.

Hopefully Harry Potter doesn't go this way now, too. It's an annoying fad, but if it helps rake in enough money to make The Silver Chair, so be it.

  40. Eliseo says:

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but Harry Potter will be in 3D too.

  41. Follower of Aslan says:

Yes, how are they going to do that? I didin't realize that it was possible to take a movie shot in 2D and turn it into 3D. Can we tell if this means it will be awkward, and in your face, kind of a thing, or less 3D and more of an enhancement???

haha, the podcast people continue their conversations… 😀
glumPuddle has a good point though: Seeing the movie as the director planned it for the first time would give us a closer vision to his.

  42. Tarwe, the Narnian Elf says:

Hmm… Well, my first thought was "NO!" However, I may be being hasty, since I have not actually seen a movie in 3D. I'm going to refuse to think negative, because I just KNOW that I'm going to like VDT! Besides, it'll still be released in 2D. Who knows, maybe I'll like watching it in 3D. I'm just glad that it wasn't shot as a 3D movie, as that sounds a bit weird to me.

For those who have seen a 3D movie in the theater, do you have to wear the weird red/blue glasses?

  43. Centar says:

The one thing that comes to mind: The shot of the Dawn Treader riding out of the picture frame into the theater will blow your socks off! (if they shot it coming right at the camera… I hope they did, but since it was shot for 2D who knows)

  44. Trufflehunter says:

I had to see Alice in Wonderland a second time, this time in 3D because I heard it was so much better, and it was! In this case, the movie had scenes where things were meant to fit in for a 3D movie (things go flying towards the screen, etc.) A part of me feels that if the filmmakers do not do this, the movie will not be anything special. I found myself constantly taking my glasses off and looking at the screen during the talking scenes of A in W to even see if the glasses made much of a difference, which they did not. I think that unless more people see the movie, they will be spending unnecessary money to convert it into 3D in which case, the Walden Media Narnia series will just be a trilogy.

  45. Avatar was cool in 3d. Voyage will be cool too! But 2d will be fine. Because it's a great story. The story itself is fine 2d or 3d!

  46. Trufflehunter says:

Thankfully the glasses are no longer red/blue, but just like normal, clear glasses. Things look a lot more realistic than when they have a purplish tinge with the old 3D glasses!!!

  47. narniafan#1 says:

I'll def want to see the 2D first, maybe followed by 3D. I'm really glad this will bring in more $, therefore bringing more movies!

  48. NarnianElf says:

I think this is great! I personally would like to see it in 2D first to see how it was originally, but I am definately seeing it in 3D! I felt like jumping and screaming and finding some way to vent my joy when I heard this! 3D is soo cool. Makes it seem like you are completely in the story, and living onboard the Dawn Treader with the characters.

  49. LOL! I just read that on MuggleNet… geez. So long as I can see it in 2-D, I guess I'll be fine.

  50. Alambil and Tarvis says:

    OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

I am seriously freaking out now. YES YES YES!!! My prayers have been answered!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now I'm not going to worry so much about VDT going up against Tron Legacy. And like someone said, this gives me yet another excuse to deplete my bank account and see this movie multiple times in both 2D AND 3D. 😀 YAY!!!!!!

Plus, 3D is going to work PERFECTLY with this story. The giant wall of water, the kids getting swept into Narnia by a gigantic wave of water, a sea monster, Eustace as a dragon (hopefully with some nice flying scenes), the duffers…AH THIS IS GOING TO BE AWESOME!!! 😀

  51. jag says:

what these film makers dont seem to understand is that the novelty of 3d films will wear off!!! it is very likely that ppl will not be able to justify paying the higher prices every visit to the cinema! here in australia movies are a very expensive day out in most cities, here i pay $18.50 to se a 3d movie! and i have already said no to seeing movies that i liked the look of, because it is just too much money! i mean you can buy the dvd for that much and keep it!!! not to mention they are trying to bring the magic back to narnia with this film, and bring in the Family audience again… most family's will not be able to afford to take the whole family to a 3d movie everytime, the novelty will wear off, and ppl will stop paying the higher price!!! i just pray this will not be the case for Narnia, but im afraid it is looking that way! lets all pray for the best possible outcome for this film… and promote it to everyone you know, and everyone you dont!

  52. loverforben says:

    Sweet!

  54. Lady Galadriel says:

Considering all of the other 3D movies being released at the same time as Voyage, I think it's a good move. I can't wait to see the Dawn Treader itself in 3D! 😀

  55. eustacegirl says:

okay so how will i get to see the 2D version and when?

  56. Luis Daniel says:

This is awsome, narnia in 3-D my dream cme true!!!!!!!!!! im going to watch it in 2-D and 3-D

  57. ernesto says:

  58. Andrea says:

    Nooooooooooo

  59. Nerwende says:

Pretty much my thoughts as well. I've been debating whether to go see Avatar or Alice because I want to see how the technology these days actually feels like (I've seen some shorter 3D films many years back), but since neither movie is THAT interesting to me, I haven't decided yet. But I certainly won't go see both (and all the rest that are lining up now) because "OMG they're in 3D!!!11". Not even if I end up thinking the one I saw was an amazing experience. Going to movies is so expensive that I pick very carefully what films I see in the theatre and which ones I wait to get on DVD. And the season tickets we have here (that are a bit cheaper/one ticket than if you'd buy them separately) don't cover 3D films, so unless there's a change in that / drop in ticket prices I really think the novelty will wear off soon. And as long as the basic reasoning in Hollywood for going 3D is "more money from the tickets" I don't see that happening.

  60. Lucille Brown says:

My dad told me this news before I read it on here claiming that he knew this Narnia scoop before I did. Although, for this so called ''rumor'' was mentioned on Narniaweb twice at two different times and thus I thought it was highly likely to happen. I never really saw in advantage in having it in 3-D, but you make a good point now I have will have another excuse to see it more times than once.
