The First Dawn Treader Footage
Walden Media and Twentieth Century Fox hosted a Narnia event for Christian leaders this weekend in Los Angeles. My wife and I were privileged to be able to attend and to represent NarniaWeb. On Friday night, we attended a panel discussion moderated by Hugh Hewitt with the filmmakers and were able to see a few minutes of Dawn Treader. I’ll share with you some initial thoughts and information gleaned from the event, but I don’t want to spoil too much for our readers. I’ll tell you, though, to start off that I absolutely loved what I saw of the film and loved what Michael Apted had to say about his vision for the film.
Narnia Panel Discussion
The first group in the Narnia discussion panel was Professor Devin Brown of Asbury College (and author of Inside Narnia), Walden Media President Micheal Flaherty, and Douglas Gresham, the stepson of C.S. Lewis. They told the story of how Walden got the franchise in the first place and about how this film came to be. Gresham also shared some anecdotes about life with Jack (C.S. Lewis).
The next panel was made up of David Weil (CEO of Anschutz Film Group) and Elizabeth Gabler (President of Fox 2000 Pictures). David told the story of moving the production from Disney to Fox and Elizabeth shared that she had flown to New York to try to secure the rights to The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe at the same time that Walden was doing so. She was disappointed not to secure the rights to make the films so when the opportunity came up to work on Dawn Treader she jumped at it.
Concept Art
Next, Michael Apted and Mark Johnson were interviewed. He shared that this is a very character-driven film and that it is not going to be a film that has special effects without any real content. He said this movie is about temptation and learning how to overcome it, wrapped in an adventure story. Michael then took us through a 20-minute presentation with concept art and a few still frames to give us the basic outline of the movie. He described the five islands, where we’ll see them, and what will happen on each one. He also pointed out how each island will have a different and unique look to it.
I’m not going to go into a lot of depth here or share a lot of spoilers, but I will tell you that the concept art looks very good. Some of the still shots in particular show the tremendous work of cinematographer Dante Spinotti. There were shots of Goldwater and the sailing Dawn Treader which blew me away. Just the concept art that we were shown of Aslan at the end of the film made my heart catch in my throat.
Apted’s description of the movie’s storyline made a lot of sense. I can now see the storyline complete with changes that they’ve made and the rough outlook seems like it will work really well.
A Super Trailer
Finally, we were treated to about five minutes of the film. The format was that of a trailer, with small 5-20 second scenes one after another. There were some shots that weren’t complete yet and still needed the full CGI treatment. Toward the end of the presentation it began to feel a bit more like a trailer with quick shots and cuts back and forth. I’d say the whole piece together could be described as a super-trailer.
Without giving away too much, I will mention a few things about the footage we saw. There were shots of the transition into Narnia and some shots onboard the Dawn Treader with Eustace (quite funny). We saw some interaction between Lucy and Gael and quite a lot of shots of Lucy in the magician’s house. There were a few finished shots of Reepicheep, several “beauty shots” of the Dawn Treader sailing, and some incredible shots of the entrance to Aslan’s Country from the end of the film. Liam Neeson’s lines have been recorded so we heard Aslan several times throughout the footage.
Can’t Wait For This Film
As you can imagine, it was intensely exciting getting to see these first images from the film. My first impressions are that Michael Apted’s Narnia “feels” like the same Narnia that we’ve seen on film so far. The new director has brought a new energy and vision to the project, but the continuity between the previous films is vastly encouraging. The visuals are completely stunning. As good as we thought the Dawn Treader looked during filming, it looks much better on screen and sailing on the water–just absolutely phenomenal! All the footage that I have seen tells me that this is going to be a very well-built, well-paced film with a lot of attention to detail and character.
I’d like to thank to Walden Media, Twentieth Century Fox, and Grace Hill Media (event hosts) for the invitation this weekend. I came away more excited than ever for this film. I was really encouraged by what I saw on all fronts: directing, cinematography, and storyline. Fans: you are going to love what you see when you see it!
My colleague Paul Martin of NarniaFans was at the event as well. I’d encourage you to check out his report posted here.
Awwwwwwwwwesssssooooommmmmme!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can't wait till this movie!!!!!!! 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀
(My new name is on top. My old one was "Tarkheen Princess.")
Yes, I do. I've prayed for it for long.
Wow! Absolutely amazing!!! These news gave me new hope for VDT! Can't wait for the trailer!!! Long live Aslan and go Dawn Treader!
I actually like the fact that they keep the spoilers hidden. I've seen way too much of a few films (PC included) before the premiere and it's just given too much away so that when I saw the actual film there were few surprises…
I'm going to try to keep myself from seeing any clips until December:)
I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!! VDT will be the best movie of the year!
haha…you have WAY more self control than I do! I want to see some spoilers! Then again, I don't want it to give away too many of the awesome things in the movie….I want the movie to be a suprise! 😀
This is exciting!! All that was said has got me feeling pretty positive, just to have a re-establishment of the character driven-ness of the film is mighty uplifting.
Yeay for Goldwater being in it for sure!
Bring on the first trailer!!
Same here. I REALLY WANT TO SEE A TRAILER! 🙂
Well, this has me a little more optimistic! 😀
however.
I CANNOT WAIT FOR DECEMBER 10TH!!!!!!!!! I'M GOING CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is fantastic news. I want to support the film cause I love the books, but even more than that, I want to see this film again and again cause it takes me someplace I have never been. I hope that can happen. Then maybe The Silver Chair and Magicians Nephew!!!!!!!
Yay! Now I'm wondering/hoping/praying that VDT will be at San Diego Comic Con this year. Please please please! 😀
maybe its on youtube
AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! I CAN'T WAIT TILL THE TRAILER COMES OUT!!! HOW ARE WE GOING TO LIVE TILL DECEMBER????? KEEP THE STORY OF ASLAN ALIVE!!!!
Edmund belongs to C.S. Lewis, so he's not yours. But hopefully you just mean that you hope that Edmund is in the trailer… which I guarantee he will be. Anything beyond that I refuse to comment on.
I might know someone who went to that… I don't know.
I don't believe that's possible, because you'd be dead before you could finish more than a couple words, for the simple reason that you would have too much blood in your brain. But I know how you feel! I was like, "A trailer, or just footage?" But I really want to avoid spoilers, except for new characters, because I don't want to have a heart attack in the theaters! Then I would hope to go to Aslan's Country.
*checks book* The order of the islands in the book (at least, after the Pevensies and Eustace join the ship) is as follows: the Lone Islands (Felimath, Avra, and Doorn- where Lord Bern is found), Dragon's Island (so named because Eustace becomes a dragon and then is undragoned [phrase courtesy of Edmund] by Aslan, and they find Lord Octesian's arm-ring and suppose that he died), Burnt Island (which takes up barely a page and a half in the book- it is uninhabited and the only reason it's even in the book is because they find Reepicheep's coracle there), then Deathwater (where Lord Restimar died from jumping into this stream that turns things into gold), then Coriakin's Island (where they meet the Dufflepuds and Lucy makes these little Monopodic Dwarfs visible), the Dark Island (where they find Lord Rhoop in the darkness), and finally Ramandu's island, where Caspian meets his future wife and Ramandu sends the Reepicheep to the World's End and where Caspian and company find the Lord Revilian, Argoz, and Mavramorn). Then the story is basically over. I hope that this answers your question! But you have to remember that this is in the book- Walden and Disney did not do a very good job of staying close to the book in PC. Hopefully Fox will be better! And there may only be six islands in the movie- people at NW suspect that Burnt Island is combined with some other island.
I hope that they do! It is really cool and gives Caspian character!
Pray that the movie will touch people's hearts and lives. If you're not a praying person, then the only advice that I have for you is this: don't spoil the movie for yourself. Stay away from clips! I might not even watch the trailer- I didn't for PC and LWW- in fact, I learned that PC was coming out at the early date of… the night it came out! I'm fairly new to movie Narnia, as you can tell. 🙂
A TRAILER! SO SOON! SAIL ON DAWN TREADER! HERE WE GO!
haha….you're so literal! lol. That would interesting if a person's heart started beating that fast! yikes! 😛
Exciting! The theme of temptation is what the original story is all about: Tempted to greed on Deathwater, Eustace Tempted with greed in the Dragon's cave, the others Tempted to leave Eustace behind on Dragon Isle, Lucy Tempted to spy on her friends in the Magicians house, Everyone Tempted to despair at the Dark Island, Caspian Tempted to go on to Aslan's country against counsel of his whole ship. And there are more. I think Apted nailed it. This bodes well for the movie. Very well indeed!
O! Yay. I really wish we could see it!!! 🙂 I am excited about that! Yahooo.. 🙂
Now I became even more curious about the movie! Started to look forward to a trailer too… 🙂
It was interesting how it was said that the movie was about temptation and overcoming it. I haven't actually thought about it, but that's definately present in the book as well. Caspian (and others) tempted at Goldwater, Lucy while reading the Magician's book, Eustace to steal water, and so on…
I can't wait until a trailer!
Thank you Tirian! This has made me feel SOOO much better! Maybe we'll see a trailer fairly soon!
Im so exited to see the trailer!!!!!!!!!!!!! plis put the trailer now!!!!! This movie is going to rock the world!!!!!!
WOW you have AMAZING self control I'm probly going to watch the first clip like the second i hear abput!!! LOL
I know I'm so happy lol I can't wait till december 10th
WOW that sounds AWESOME!!! I'm still a little iffy about whoever Gael is, but I love the fact that Apted and Johnson said that it's a film about overcoming temptation wrapped up in an adventure story–that is completely in line with how Lewis wrote the series, and it's wonderful to hear that the film is apparently going to reflect that. Also, it's an interesting take on VDT since I'd never really thought of it as a story about temptation before, but now that I think of it, it really is.
Needless to say, I can't wait for December 10th. I hope it blows the box office away 🙂
YES!!!!!!! I'm so excited, and the news that it looks good makes it all the more exciting. I can't wiat to see it!!!!
GOOD NEWS AT LAST!!! Very encouraging to hear, after learning of Izzard's departure. Let's see what they can come up with. I did like most of the description of the footage so far and I do trust Michael Apted, even if I don't trust the scriptwriters we've got so far as much.
Alrighty! This is awesome! Really excited for the movie! Sail on, VDT!
Go VDT!
Wow. This is the beginning of the marketing rundown to the release. The news and glimpses can only get "more better" from here on out.
I wonder if either "Tirian" or Paul Martin asked the question, "when can the fans look to see an actual clip or trailer"? I looked carefully but didn't see any reference to the answer. Maybe they asked but it's a secret? It helps me to be patient, when I know how long I have to wait. Probably we'll be seeing something of the kind by summer….
Hey, I was on the next entry about the Dufflepuds and it wouldn't let me post a comment. Can anybody help me figure it out?
Me too! I get sooo mad when I'm not told something… ah well. Once a bunch of my family went to see a movie, and they kept quoting these lines and laughing but when I asked them what they were talking about they said "We can't tellyou because it would spoil the movie once you do see it." 😀
Wow you left a long comment 😀
hey yall whas up
What throne are you going to inherit?? 😀
Maybe when they took the picture down, they made it so we couldn't comment any more.
Maybe when they took the picture of the Dufflepud down, they made it so we couldn't comment any more.
Whoops, sorry! 😮 Didn't mean to double comment!
I'm more excited now than ever!!
I have loved everyone of these movies so far; and I am very excited about the Voyage of the dawn treader. I hope they do a sequel on each one of the books that CS Lewis wrote. The first two movies where very heart touching; good family films that I would like to see more of. I love Aslan;he is a very beautiful creature in the movie; and Liam Neeson's voice is so beautiful in this movie; they chose the right person for the voice of Aslan.
I have just recently heard about the loss of his Lovely Wife (Natasha) of whom we all loved so dearly!! My heart and prayers go out to him and his family for their loss!! She will be greatly missed by us all!!!!!!!
Everything that I've been hearing aout Voyoge of the Dawn Treader seems to be exactly what I wanted to hear!(Except that I'm a little confused about Gael and I hav'nt heard anything about Ramundous daughter!)
the movies are just crap when compared with the books
Ohhh, i'm so glad everything looks good. I'm excited to see just how much, if at all, Apted changed or added things to Narnia. It sounds like he really has kept with the old narnia, if not made it better, which isn't a hard thing to do being the film that follows Prince Caspian LOL
OMG! that's soo amazingg!! I wish i were there guyzz!
i can't wait to see the voyage of the dawn treader
Oh yeah, for sure
When the count down reaches 6 months, they will come out!
YAYAYAYAYAYAY!!!!!!! I'm so EXCITEDDDDD!!!!!!!! XD XD XD
I'm so pleased that the film looks encouraging and that it doesn't appear that they've changed our beloved Narnia! I'm so HAPPPPYYYYYYYY!!!!! I LOVE MICHAEL ATPED AND FOX FOR SAVING NARNIAAA!!! Now all they have to do is convince me that reepicheep's new voice will be as good as the old one…
Hmmm. Maybe that's it. I was just kinda annoyed 😀
Oohmoohgoosh, you guys! THis is going to be totally AWESOME!
PLEASE!
Year it will be toatly badass and will pawn alot of other movies i went and say the set a WBMW movie world so year it will be pro or every new hit
Awesome news I have always been a big Narnia fan and when I heard they are now doing the Voyage of the Dawn treader I was excited beyond belief.
Aaron Roadnight
Oh my goodness! That is SO exciting!!! I can't wait for the movie to come out. From the report, it sounds like it's going to be really good. We're getting further up and further in, and I'm looking forward to the end result!
I am personally sooooooooooooooooo excited. I want to have a comment-discussion though on Ramandu and his daughter. I think that that is the most and main puzzling part of the movie. I REALLY want to see it.
This movie is going to be AWESOME!! this is my favorite book in the series. i'm pretty sure they are keeping the line where Aslan says " in your world i am known by another name" which is awesome!!
