VDT Blog – “Diving Right In”
When it was proposed (or mandated) that Skandar and co-stars Will Poulter and
Georgie Henley don a wet suit to earn their scuba PADI (Professional Association of
Diving Instructors) certificate before filming commenced on โThe Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader,โ the teenage trio dove right in, you might say, to yet another adventure and challenge. The third book in C.S. Lewisโ series begins when the two youngest Pevensies, along with their irritating cousin Eustace, are swallowed into a bedroom wall painting, which depicts a ship sailing on the high seas.
To create the effect of the bedroom flooding with water, the productionโs mechanical SFX crew, under the direction of veteran movie magician Brian Cox, and working with Barry Robisonโs and Ian Gracieโs crack art department and construction crew, duplicated the sound stage bedroom set on an elevated platform which was then dunked into the smaller of Warner Roadshowโs two exterior studio water tanks. The three actors were then instructed to swim out of the bedroom door and windows to the surface.
Weeks before their scenes were filmed, Keynes, Poulter and Henley underwent a three-day scuba diving course under the supervision of Aussie diving instructor Andrew Allen. The actors trained in a local swimming pool and at sea.
You can say they all took to the lessons like fish to water.
After a relatively short rehearsal period in the studio tanks, filming began on the bedroom water scenes in late July, the first week of production. A short time later, the three young actors dove into a second studio tank, to enact the moments where they surface in the ocean and are saved by Caspian and his crew aboard the Dawn Treader.

Thanks to everybody who sent this spy report in!
I don't really know about that, Narniangirl. I mean, if you're a girl, you can admire a guy for being daring and not fall in love with him.
Also, I wonder what part Lucy is going to play? Everyone seems to be talking about Skandar/Edmund and a little bit of Will/Eustace but not Georgie/Lucy! Granted, the article does tend to focus on Skandar, but still. It's not like Lucy's character or Georgie's to just sit there and wait to be rescued- wonder what she's going to do?
Another question: Was Skandar 17 at the time of this shooting? Because if he was 18, why was it mandated that he take scuba lessons? He's a legal adult.
I'm not sure where the edit button is so I have to double-post- sorry! Yeah, Narniangirl, they are making much out of him- but you know who they should really be "bigging up"? Will Poulter! He's going to be in the next couple of movies- and Skandar's not. And the reason that they're doing it is so every girl will swoon and every boy will be amazed and every person will go see the movie!
Wow, thanks so much Andrew!!! ๐
Watch out for alligators ๐
THAT'S WHAT WE'RE WAITING FOR TOO!!! SO EXCITED!!! The first time we saw the PC preview was in the theater and I was actually breathless afterwards!!! CAN'T WAIT!
It's exactly 44 weeks and 4 days til it comes out in theaters!!!
My brother set my cellphone up to where a calendar event comes up every week, reminding us all that it's one week less til NARNIA comes out!!! Right now it's 44 weeks and 4 days… at least in the USA. =) I LOVE how they're doing it. So true to the book!
Hey, wait. They'd have to do the whole thing in one take, right? I mean, the bedroom set would be ruined. Or maybe they have several bedroom sets…
Thats exactly how i imagined it too. but i thought it would all be CG….so im pumped for the real thing.
Wow! I would love to scuba dive! That would be so much fun!!! I love how they get to learn new things each film. That could really help them later in life!
How can scuba diving help them later in life? Last time I checked there where laws about making kids under 18 perform dangerous stunts. Skandar is that old, but I know for a fact that the other two aren't. Get a grip.
I assume Skandar was 17. Wasn't this early in filming, like July? He turned 18 in September.
Am I the only one that found this disturbing when I read it? Why a daredevil? Why fearless, in the face of possible death? I didn't know I needed to pray for his physical safety last summer and fall! Maybe I'm wrong but this sounds to me like he's more than just an adventurous nature-lover, like he's seeking thrills–or death. [Does he have a death wish?] I pray God makes Skandar desire peace and safety! ๐
No alligatores. But plenty of eels. That is of course when I am not looking for them. The they tend to vanish. Pity, they tast quite well with some garlic.
coollllll!!!!!!!cant wait to see it!!!
Scuba is cool! I would sooooo love to learn how to Scuba and if I was in Australia where all the cool reefs are, I would learn it too! Legally persons over the age of 12 can learn scuba, and if it was me, the company asks me to learn scuba for a movie, I would jump (probably backwards off a boat I guess) at the opportunity:)
lol i really want sc
hes a guy
Really? Are you serious? Can't people be arrested for things like underage stunting?
Well, where I come from it's called Scissors, Paper, Rock:). So I guess it's different everywhere aye!
Perhaps broiled and wrapped in roasted seaweed?
http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/rachael-ray/unagi-roll-broiled-fresh-water-eel-recipe/index.html
we always said "scissors, paper, stone". ๐ funny. also we came up with a more complicated version involving "earth, fire, water." the earth would muddy the water, the water would put out the fire, and the fire would burn the earth. I know that's lame…you can tell how bored we were with car trips… =) =)
Doesn't it say in the book something like Lucy kicked off her shoes while Eustace foolishly flapped his arms up and down? I don't know what I'm talking about!! ๐ But Ed or Lu probably does something like that. I'm so excited!!! This sounds really cool. Maybe water starts gushing out from the painting and carries the pevs and scrubb inside the painting. Anyways, who cares now, the day is comeing slowly!!! Can't wait for it any longer. And like I said b4 in the other link, like, two links down, I said it'd b sweet if Edmund saved Lucy or something. Maybe have Lu fight for Edmund when he's being taken to the dungeon. Remeber a while it said Edmund was in a dungeon? Perhaps that's why Lucy has a sword. I wish Edmund or Lucy would fight back to being kept from being separated from Pug. It'd be SO sweet! Showing how brotherly and sisterly they r.
Well, I'm glad Edmund's character gets to do more in this film, b/c it's the LAST film for him. If they don't "big him up" at all, I'll be disappointed. I was glad Peter had such an amazing role in PC (the fight with Miraz, the awesome jump over the drawbridge, etc.) b/c now we all miss him.
No I like that, ForNarniaAndForAslan. ๐ It makes about as much sense as the original version.
And it's funny how everyone calls the "Rock-Paper-Scissors" game (or whichever name you prefer) a different way. I never even thought about it before. Guess you learn something new every day. ๐
Yes, they can. However, learning to scuba dive was a safety precaution so the actors wouldn't drown and could stay safely underwater for long periods of time. Notice that the article said that Will, Skandar, and Georgie were "mandated" to learn (e.g., so that they would be safe). The production was looking out for their safety. Scuba diving, in this case, is not a stunt- it's merely a precaution. A stunt is, according to my understanding, an action by an actor which appears in the production. You know, like when Will M. jumps up on his galloping horse during the castle raid in PC, or when Anna falls off Aslan's How during the battle, or when Skandar slips off the castle wall to be "caught" by a Gryphon, or when Georgie steps on that fragile, thin piece of ground and falls a little way down the gorge. I guarantee you, that unless the production decides to really mess up the movie, you will not see the actors with scuba masks on! And I'm not sure on this, but I think that the actors are in compliance with the UK and Australian laws on scuba diving. If what Lillyput90 says is true, then they are within the law. It's not like Arabella was doing it. Although that would be cute! ๐
Probably Georgie's and Will's parents had to sign some type of permission slip to allow them to do that though. If Skandar was 17 at the time then his parents might have had to as well.
I heard on a video, (I don't know if this is completely accurate) that all schoolchildren in England have to be able to swim a certain number of yards.
This is going to be so much fun! Aunt Alberta Scrubb will really ground them after this!
HMM! Seaweed sounds tasty. None around these parts though. Simmered in nettles might do. One must have greens in the diet.
I'm so glad that te're keeping to the book and the're obviously taking it really seriously to take diving lessons and everything! It's going to be really great and i can't wait!please comment!!!;)
there's nothing wrong with scuba-diving and anyway if you want this film to turn out good maybe it's a good thing they do these stunts and anyway i'm sure there's safety!
Well, I don't think Skandar has a death wish. I'm a daredevil too, and I'm a girl, and a Christian too at that! I would say let's not go overboard, but that would be too lame of a pun. ๐
All the same, I am seriously praying for his safety.
Oh, that was fun to read!
No offense, 220chrisTian, but I think you might be overreacting. I think that Skandar really enjoys challenges like this, and even though it's not the safest of environments, he's not actually trying to kill himself. I don't think that he wants to die- I certainly hope that he doesn't! (That would entirely ruin HHB!) But it cannot possibly hurt to pray for his physical safety as well as his (and others') emotional and spiritual safety.
Yeah, we all miss him, but he is going to be in this film! At least, there was his double casted, so he must be in it. So excited!!!!!!!! ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ฎ hee hee
Here's how I picture this. In the book, it describes the painting as looking like it's becoming more and more life-like, to the point where the waves begin to move and water actually splashes out of the painting. In the described movie transition, I'm picturing that the picture on teh wall transforms into a 'picture-framed' porthole of sorts as the whole bedroom is transported to Narnia. SO the painting of the Dawn Treader on the ocean, becomes the real Dawn Treader and the kids are looking through the rooms 'porthole' (previously a painting) out into the ocean where the Dawn Treader is sailing. The bedroom, obviously not designed to work as a sailing vessel, immediately begins to sink, causing water to pour in through any open areas (windows, cracks around door, and of course, the painting/porthole itself, eventually). The kids escape the bedroom and are rescued by the crew of the Dawn Treader that they were just looking at through the 'porthole' in their (now sunken) bedroom.
I don't know if I like the "swimming out of windows" bit. I always imagined this scene as this: the waves start to move, the ship starts to go up and down. Eustace freaks and tries to break the picture, while the Pevensies try to stop him. They all get really close to the picture, which has been getting bigger. Suddenly they're not standing on a floor anymore (it disappears), they're standing on a giant size picture frame, with waves lapping up and pouring through. They try to steady themselves. Just then, a big wave comes up and sweeps them off the picture frame, which also vanishes. However, you don't know that until Eustace starts whining about wanting to get back, which is the scene after Caspian helping Lucy, Edmund and Eustace into the ship. Then, when Eustace looks back, nothing is there. It's simply vanished, which is an unnerving experience for Eustace. Then you continue with the story. I just described what's in the book- it's actually not that hard to put on screen, with clever camera angles and special effects.
I'm not talking about them having scuba gear in the actual movie, I'm talking about the legality of the thing. That's what stunt doubles are for!
Wow… I am SO EXCITED FOR THIS! I mean, learning about what the ship looks like and seeing pictures of the actors is good, but hearing about what's going to happen is AWESOME! Sail on VDT.
Jill Pole you need to get a grip obviously it's just preparing them for the underwater scene. never are they actually going to go scuba diving in the movie. their agents/parents/them have signed contracts with a scuba diving trainer to teach them how to stay underwater for a long time. RELAX!!
Amiable brief and this mail helped me alot in my college assignement. Gratefulness you seeking your information.
I'm not an idiot I know what I'm talking about. I know that they aren't actually going to scuba dive in the movie, I'm just saying what are their stunt doubles there for anyway?
later in life???? what???
If the actual actors (Georgie, Will and Skandar) are coming to the surface in the movie, then they will need scuba training. Teaching doubles to scuba dive but not the actors would be a waste of time. And maybe production wants an underwater closeup. Anyway, I think that it's legal and I hope that it contributes to the success of the movie!
That sounds a bit silly. Like, "Let's hope Skandar doesn't kill himself, or that would ruin "The Horse and His Boy"!" I would hope he doesn't because life is precious. (There I go sounding clinche.)
I agree that it's okay to be a maverick, or a daredevil, but only to a certain extent. (Although I'm not fond of those words. Do they sound almost dangerous to anybody else????)
Really, Nathan! I'm surprised at the reactions here. This does NOT necessarily mean they will go out the window! Peace. Besides, that's jumping to conclusions.
