On the Box Interviews Will Poulter

Onthebox.com interviewed Will Poulter for his role in School of Comedy which will come out on DVD in the UK next month. Of course, while chatting with Will, they asked a few questions about The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

You’re filming The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of The Dawn Treader in Australia at the moment, how’s that going?

Its really good fun thank you, I’m really enjoying myself but I am missing home quite a bit, especially my family and friends. Although I will be sad to leave I will be really pleased to be home for Christmas.

Your character, Eustace Scrubb, isn’t very well behaved and of course you played the β€˜most badly behaved kid in school’ in Son of Rambow. How do you keep getting these type of roles?

I know, I would really like to play a nice character for once! I feel quite bad about having to play those characters and I hope there is no one like Eustace Scrubb!

The famous introduction in the book by CS Lewis is: β€œThere was a boy called Eustace Clarence Scrubb, and he almost deserved it.” Would you say that’s a fair evaluation of your character?

Absolutely. He is a complete brat, he’s obnoxious, rude, selfish and cowardly and has no respect for anyone other than himself. However he does become a much better adjusted person at the end of the book.

That's great. Sounds like he understands the character really well. But it will be interesting to see how he changes towards the end of the film!

  2. Empress of the Lone Islands says:

I'm sure it would be good fun to film πŸ™‚ I can't wait to see Will as Eustace soon….well, maybe not soon.

  3. Mark Sommer says:

It's interesting that he grew up on the show "School of Comedy." I wonder if the British show is anything like "All That" which used to be on Nickelodeon.

  4. Phosphorus says:

Interesting: "at the end of the book" rather than "by the end of the book." I wonder if this tells us something of how the movie will turn out, or it's just a slip of the tongue? Will Eustace be a thorn in the flesh for most of the film?

  5. NarnianHarpist says:

Yay – new news! Go Will! I think he will be a perfect Eustace.

  6. narnia365 says:

lol, awesome. Can't wait to see him in the movie. I think he's perfect…

  7. FriendOfNarnia2 says:

Great, now I have another thing to think about. If they made his transformation at the end of the book that would mean he's either a dragon on many of the islands, or they don't arrive on Dragon Island until the end of the book. (Which would mean the MLG would be aboard for most of the voyage.) None of those options sound good to me. I'm just hoping it was a slip of the tongue.

  8. Caspian says:

Hehe…good ol' Useless. I always thought Will would play him well. I guess we can't really know until it comes out, but this is encouraging (esp. after all those awful pics of Ben…:P)

  9. Lutra's Pearl says:

AAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!! I am so happy I got to see this, we have to get rid of the lap top today. I think he is great for Eustace! Keep the story of Aslan alive!

  10. ChristProclamer says:

'I don't think I'm famous at all.' I like that he said that. He doesn't sound puffed up for getting such a big role at his age. I'm really expecting a lot out of him, and I imagine he's doing a great job. I wouldn't worry about the 'at the end' vs. 'by the end' thing, probably just a slip. I've said the same.

  11. yeswelovenarnia says:

I am glad we have more news!!!! I like the way he knows his character!!!! that is a sign of a good actor!!!!!!

  12. narnia365 says:

Yeah, I was excited when he said that too! He doesn't sound really prideful at all. Unfortunately, from what I've read, he swears, so I don't know if there will be a good "blooper reel" or not. I guess we'll just have to see…

  13. Mal says:

maybe a 'bleeper reel,' them. πŸ™

  14. Mal says:

Well, he sounds like he is doing great. Hope the movie is as well! Further up and further in!

  15. eustacegirl says:

ooooh i got the gigglies reading this and so excited! aw poor will wants to play a nice guy for once. dont worry will eustace is a kinder boy in sc and lb

  16. MurtaghLuv says:

He really seems like the perfect fit for Eustace. I hope he can really pull it off, Eustace is one of my fave. characters.

  17. Watziznehm says:

I am glad to hear the Eustace will be as obnoxious as ever. It would be kind of weird to have a "nice" Eustace to begin with. Seeing how he becomes nice and how Narnia helps him get there is half the fun. I see that Poulter would rather play a nice character. I'm sure that he will enjoy playing Eustace in some of the other chronicles for he is a nicer character in them.

  18. Anonymous Narnian says:

I love his evaluation of Eustace's character. It'll be great to see him play the "nice guy" in the later installments.

  19. Narniamiss says:

At the "End of the Book," hmm? I hope it WAS just a slip of the tongue, and he didn't mean it literally. I love how changed he is, and how he becomes friends with Lucy and Ed. I sure hope it doesn't take that long for him to change.

  20. Mirima Rosetrader says:

FINALLY!!! NEWS!!! I'VE BEEN CHECKING THIS FREAKING THING FOR THREE WEEKS AND NOTHING! It sounds like Will really knows Eustice I cannot wait to see his performance in the movie! I don't know how I will be able to wait! Sail on VDT!

  21. Lucy P. says:

School of Comedy is a whole lot less innocent, I'm afraid.

  22. Lucy P. says:

He does swear a whole lot for School of Comedy, but from all accounts he's a well-behaved guy in real life.

  23. Brian in Calgary says:

I would think it probably is a slip of the tongue. He probably meant "…much better adjusted person BY the end of the book."

  24. Silver the Wanderer says:

Don't worry Will, Eustace turns quite valiant in SC – another reason for them to greenlight it! πŸ˜›

  25. JadistarkilleR says:

Will sounds like someone whose really worth his salt. i am so relieved that they found a kid who looks the part *and* can act with the best of them. go Will! πŸ™‚

  26. narniafan4ever β™₯ says:

Wow, that is really awesome that he knows his character! Is it just me, or does this make you feel confident that they are doing a good job in showing his bratty character? πŸ˜€ Sail on Dawn treader!!!!!! It is nice to have another update. πŸ™‚

  27. narniafan4ever β™₯ says:

My thoughts, exactly! *hee hee* πŸ˜€

  28. Lucille Brown says:

Cool! Even though no information was really shared about the movie, I like to hear how he thinks of Eustace the character he is playing.

  29. 7chronicles says:

Hopefully when they make SC, He will enjoy playing Eustace, since he is a much nicer person in SC. I'm glad he gets the character, and I can't wait to see him act in VDT! I think when he said at the end of the book, he just meant later on in the book. If he had said near the end of the film I would think they changed something. I don't think they will change when Eustace becomes a better person, hopefully. Nice to get some news, I would love an interview from Georgie or Skandar!

  30. King Skandar the Just says:

lol! I loved that one about the line in the book! Will has a good impression of his character!

  31. K. J. Hill says:

    I'm soooo excited!!!

  32. Me Sa U Sa says:

    YEAH!!!!!! MORE NEWS!!! πŸ˜‰ Anyway…pretty cool. πŸ™‚

  33. tenthofthatname says:

    Yes please!

  34. Princess Arya says:

Sounds great! From what I've seen, as well as what this says, he's an excellent Eustace. *reflects on the 7 videos of Eustace in action*

  35. NarnianElf says:

Awesome! He definetly is going to portray Eustace exactly as I imagined him… he is doing a wonderful job!! πŸ˜€

  36. 220chrisTian says:

7chronicles: I want a Georgie/Skandar interview too! πŸ˜€ I'm curious. Does anyone know exactly when filming will end? Because they said "3 weeks" in the Halloween story, which would be about November 20. And when do they go to the Whitsuntide Islands [spelling?]? Or have they already?

  37. narniafan4ever β™₯ says:

Yeah! *chanting of the Narnia Nuts…* "More interviews! More interviews! More interviews!" lol… πŸ˜€

  38. narniafan4ever β™₯ says:

Yeah, it does sound like he has his character down pat. I think he will make an awesome Eustace… πŸ˜€ I can't wait until December 10th, 2010!!!!!! Sadly, it seems like an eternity until them…gr… πŸ™

  39. aravistarkheena says:

NOT SOON?!?!?! WHAT R U TALKING ABOUT?!?!?!?! THIS IS NARNIA WE'RE TALKING ABOUT HERE!!!!!!!!!

  40. aravistarkheena says:

What is this whole "School of Comedy" thing anyway?

  41. RumbleBuffinTheStrong says:

    Sounds good…

  42. aravistarkheena says:

    Hmmmmm… Very interesting…

  43. The Great and Fearless Pug says:

Oh, don't worry, Will! Eustace is nice at the end.

  44. iLiveInNarnia says:

Great interview. Haha. I guess some people were just ment to play "bad" people. πŸ™‚

  45. iLiveInNarnia says:

    399 days and counting πŸ˜‰

  46. Starlily says:

I hope Eustace's transition from bad to good will be handled well in the movie. And I'm sure "AT the end of the book" was just a slip of the tongue. (I'm glad I'm not famous, because if I was interviewed, I'd probably stick my foot in my mouth multipal times πŸ™‚ )

  47. redeemedqueen says:

NEAT! NICE TO FINALLY HEAR SOMETHING FROM WILL!

  48. Empress of the Lone Islands says:

I mean we won't be able to SEE him soon. About 400 days I think, unless you count the trailers.

  49. Hermitess of Narnia says:

I would be more concerned about him saying that Eustace becomes a "better adjusted person". That isn't exactly what happens, Eustace became a "better" person after realizing he really was a dragon, "the change had begun". He learns about following Aslan during the whole voyage after dragon island which makes for an excellent story line. It is more dramatic if we see him working to be nice and helpful.
It is wonderful to know that Will Poulter wants to play a nice character in a role, if they ever do the Silver Chair he'll get the chance.

  50. Puddleglum says:

Most likely a "slip of the tongue", as suggested.
I still have not been able to dig my copies out of the boxes as yet. But if I recall, Eustace, even after having his dragon skin, (and nature) shed by Aslan, still acted as the "old Eustace" at times.
I believe that anyone who "runs the race", of faith can understand that.

  51. ASLAN'S CHILD says:

awesome.he sounds like he really knows what hes doing.cant wait to see him on the big screen!!!!!

  52. que hasen bien chido el poster de la trabesia del viajero de Alba

  53. FriendOfNarnia2 says:

We are almost exactly one month away from being one year away from sitting in the theater, watching The Voyage of the Dawn Treader!

  54. Reep13 says:

Cool interview. All you guys are getting worked up about might be just a speaking error.

  55. Silver the Wanderer says:

    Yeeeaaaaa *cheers* πŸ˜›

  56. narnian resident says:

always good for an actor to know his character and how to describe them. that shows they'll do well in portraying them in the movie, i hope i hope!

  57. decarus says:

I don't think that is an error what will said. Eustace is better at the end of the book.

  58. always narnian says:

Haha. yes I love that classic begining to voyage of the dawn treader. He DOES deserve that name πŸ™‚ All the same, I feel Eustace is very likeable in the silver chair and the last battle

  59. Princess Arya says:

    *gapes* That's an incredible milestone!
