Interesting Tidbits On Rhince and Rynelf

Georgie Henley chats with Arthur Angel (left) and Tony Nixon (right)

NarniaWebber icarus stumbled across the blog of one of the Telmarine crew members working on The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. In this blog he confirms what roles Rhince and Rynelf will have for the movie. If you are avoiding spoilers for the movie, you may wish to stop reading here as both characters have been changed.

From the blog of Mirko Grillini (who plays “The Belligerent Telmarine”):

Arthur [Angel] plays Rhince in the film, joining the crew on board of the Dawn Treader to begin his voyage looking for his wife.

Narnia has now reopened the door to [Tony Nixon’s] screen performance abilities with his role of Rynelf, the right hand of Captain Drinian (played by Gary Sweet). He is effectively my boss on the boat

For those of you who follow the discussions on the forum, we’ve long suspected that Rhince might be the father to Gael based on the video clip here where the two jump off the side of the ship to swim out to Gael’s mother.

We’d also noticed that Rhince never appears in a typical sailors costume unlike the rest of the crew, and rather appears to be a blacksmith or some other craftsman.

So this blog has confirmed that the role of Rhince has been changed from the book and Rynelf will be taking his place as First Mate. Should be interesting to see how they do this come Dec 2010!

Huge thanks to icarus for the find!

Yeah I know what you're saying. But take LWW, for example. It wasn't EXACTLY like the book word for word but it was still faithful to it, one reason why I think it was so successful. By embellish i meant changing entire concepts and sequences. For example, in PC, the susan/caspian romance and the castle raid. They were purely subplots that the filmmakers put in themselves in an attempt to make it better. Those are the changes that I'm talking about, and that's the type of change this whole Rhince/Rynelf thing is sounding like.

  2. Reepicheep, Knight of Narnia says:

Too true! I am anxious to see how all this plays out…

  3. NarnianJedi says:

Seriously,Why can't they just stick with the books??????

  4. Ariel_of_Narnia says:

    uh-huh

  5. Ariel_of_Narnia says:

Okay, that would have been just my first time noticing. I've been replied to before (looking back to things I said in, like, September!).

  6. Ariel_of_Narnia says:

I totally agree with you, Long Live King Skandar!
LWW was a greater success because, even though they changed things (some that I like were Jadis' castle, crown, wand, and dress; the waterfall scene; and Aslan restoring Tumnus first), they stayed very close to the books. PC went WAY off course (eg: the UNNECESSARY night raid; Caspian blowing the horn so soon; "Supian" trash; Peter acting the way he does (which, TO AN EXTENT, is okay because it's understandable); and Lucy finding Aslan AT THE END OF THE FILM, shortening his significant role by, like, 75% if not more; and so on). Everybody's hoping that VDT will revive the Narnia movies.

  7. Ariel_of_Narnia says:

That's what I (and how many others?)want to know!

  8. Fire Fairy says:

I must say I have very mixed feelings about this. First, I'm pretty sure I'll be okay with this whole subplot, because, if Rhince's wife is a slave on the Lone Islands, it adds a very personal reason to abolishing the slave trade and brings it to a much deeper level than in the book. On the other hand, it simply isn't logical to switch the roles of Rhince and Rynelf. I'm with everybody on this part…what was the reasoning behind this switch??? It makes absolutely NO sense. And I don't believe the scriptwriters simply confused the roles–that would suggest that they weren't very fervent in their research. I think they do go through extensive research, and then change the plot up a bit to make it more interesting and involved for the audience. And please don't shoot me for saying that. 😉 Many of us Narnia fanatics tend to forget that the target audience includes non-Narnian fans as well, like the several thousand people who have seen the movies and liked them, but have never read the books. Pacing and timing are also very important in movies, where they are carried out differently than they are in books. Moviemakers have a two to two and a half hour block of time to fit in the story as well as all the points they want to get across. That's probably why the timing for the blowing of the horn and seeking Aslan in PC was so different; in order to have good pacing and a fair amount of tension, they had to change the order of things a bit. On the other hand, I do not approve of major character changes, because characters, in my opinion, are the heart and soul of a story. You change the character, you change the entire story.

  9. Narniamiss says:

I know, I know. It is a bit frustrating, isn't it? We Narnia purists just hate to see anything changed; it's hard to see someone basically saying, "It's not good enough." 🙁 But cheer up, I'm sure it won't be so bad in the end. Even though PC was drastically changed, I had to make myself see what I DID like about it, and be content with that.

  10. Narniamiss says:

I think most of us have come to a conclusion: "Why on earth do they have to keep changing the story?" The answer? THEY DON'T. They want to. Big difference. But the way I see it, this isn't as bad as like say the Night Raid. Sure, it changes the story a bit, but it is per say an ok change, I mean, I think most of us will eventually be fine with it. I just hope there aren't any more major changes….

  11. Pattertwigs Pal says:

There were so many comments I agree with I didn't know which one to reply to! I chose this one because I know I will also be reading VDT before the movie comes out. I also wish they would stay closer to the book, don't see why they had change Rhince instead of having Rynelf have the wife (if they have to do that at all),and wonder where in the world they come up with these ideas.

  12. Starlily says:

Yes, I hope the movie won't be cluttered with too many plots and subplots. :S

  13. Starlily says:

I agree too. I don't like the change, but it might not be so bad if they do it right. If they can only do the other parts of the movie right…

  14. Hermitess of Narnia says:

From what I can tell, this isn't necessarily bad. In fact, it is wonderful that Rhince wants to find his wife in the film. But if they change a major plotline in the books just to accomodate this (I still can't forget that part of only a voyage to the end of the world saving Narnia.) And it depletes another scene from the book, this will be bad news. Too many main characters also might hurt the story.
It would give a very good reason to depose governor Gumpas.
Keep praying that the film will turn out right.

  15. Starlily says:

Don't get too upset yet. The change could have been worse. They could have made Rhince a traitor, secretly working with Pug. Or they could have made his wife a mermaid. 😉
Oh no! They could still do that! Movie people, don't get any ideas from my joking around!

  16. Starlily says:

    Y

  17. Starlily says:

Whoops! I was going to say, remember how they switched Glozelle and Sopespian in PC? Glozelle was supposed to be the guy who thought up the plan to betray Miraz. But they made him a sympathetic character in the movie. This kind of reminds me of that, but in a different way.

  18. Starlily says:

I don't get it either. *sigh*

  19. narniafan4ever ♥ says:

They get their ideas from the same place that Bigfoot and the Lochness monster came from…..lol. 😀

  20. narniafan4ever ♥ says:

    That was my guess. 😀

  21. Lady Galadriel says:

Oh yeah! *shakes head* Why do they have to do so much switching?

  22. pixiedust says:

Yeah, I'm pretty curious too.. How did they get seperated in the first place?

  23. pixiedust says:

    haha so true!!

  24. Carrie says:

Horrible isn't it? And don't forget Edmund and Caspian sword fighting.

  25. narniafan4ever ♥ says:

That is part of the mystery…..*bwa ha ha*….lol 😀

  26. narniafan4ever ♥ says:

Yeah, that is true, Lady Galadriel. BUT, it is one thing to say and another thing to do….

  27. narniafan4ever ♥ says:

    dido! 😀

  28. Silver the Wanderer says:

You've got some very good points there, Fire Fairy.

  29. JadistarkilleR says:

my thoughts exactly. why Rhince of all the characters they could choose from? or better yet, why even use Rhince and not just create a new character the same way they did with MLG?

i'm starting to wonder if this whole subplot with Rhince and MLG has any bearing on the plot or future Narnia movies or if its simply tacked on for dramatic effect? character development maybe, for Lucy specially? i guess given that Caspian and Eustace has the meaty parts they had to add something for the Pevensies. i guess wartime effects on the siblings seen at the beginning isnt enough for Apted.

  30. JadistarkilleR says:

relax, the Caspian-Edmund scene is just playful sparring, not a heated argument that boiled over like what happened with Peter and Caspian in PC. thats the kind of additions i dont mind having. subplots and character switcheroos like this one is something that i have to be extremely skeptical about.

  31. Lady of Narnia says:

    lol. totally.

  32. Lady of Narnia says:

I must say that I agree with you whole-heartedly, Narniamiss. As long as there aren't any more REALLY major changes, I think I'll be fine with it. The whole plot thing with Gael (I hope I spelled it correctly) is quite interesting, if you ask me. But that is just my opinion.
This may, in my opinion, end up like the movie Eragon. A really great movie by itself, but very dim in comparison to the book.

  33. CoriaKing says:

I hope they dont change the plot too. I really didn't like how they did that with PC. AND, if they're gonna put the "spiced wine" part in the movie, then please let them put it in the right place. In Prince caspian they were taking lines from the books and putting them a in a totally wrong context. I'm just praying Apted will do better than Adamson.

  34. glumPuddle says:

They don't HAVE to change things. But they should. The Night Raid was a good change. In the book, Lewis skims over several battles in a few paragraphs. That works great in a book. But in a movie, it makes much more sense to do one big battle. That's what adaptation is all about: Take something that works well in a book, and try to make it work just as well in a movie.

The main theme of the VDT book is "longing." A longing to find one's true home. Does Rhince and his wife fit into that somehow? We'll see. This may be a change designed to emphasize important themes of the book that might otherwise be lost in translation. This was the reason most of the changes in PC were made.

  35. Lady Galadriel says:

Agreed, glumPuddle; the changes from PC were still "in the spirit of the book," if you ask me. The same things basically happened, only with a different way of saying them. Still, I happened to dislike the different way of saying things that they chose.

  36. Fire Fairy says:

    No kidding!!!!!

  37. Fire Fairy says:

glumPuddle, thank you so much for being the voice of reason. A lot of us have a tendency to shoot down anything that isn't "true" to the books. Many of us forget what it means to adapt a book into a movie. A lot of changes have to take place to make the pacing, tension, and other things fit together. The moviemakers also have to consider that large part of their audience that has never even picked up a Narnia book–will they like what they see? Or will they end up with only Narnia fans going to the movies? Just something to think about.

  38. Starlily says:

Very true, glumPuddle. Let's try to be optimistic, and see how it turns out. At least we're getting our frustration out of our systems now, instead of while we're watching the movie. 🙂

  39. Eden says:

Yeah, I totally agree. Why have Rhince looking for his wife and not Rynelf? I suppose we'll just have to see how it turns out on film… I really hope this is the last of the changes!! If they change anything else, I'm not going to be too happy. 🙁

Anyways, it's good to hear someone else will be reading the book before the movie! 🙂 I want to see how close they keep it, and if the same feel is there. 😀

  40. Eden says:

I'm not so sure I like mysteries when they involve the plot of my dear Narnia! 😉

  41. Eden says:

Yeah, I am really curious about the Rhince's 'wife'. It seems pretty strange that she could be on one of the islands that the Dawn Treader passes by, and even stranger is wondering how she got there! Maybe if she got caught by slave traders and sold on the Lone Islands… But if they found her there, then that would be pretty soon in the movie to end that sub-plot… It would seem like a waste of space to me.
I really wonder how this all is going to play out. 🙂

  42. narnia fan7 says:

    I agee with glumpuddle

  43. narnian resident says:

i dont really understand why either, but thats what business does. however i wish they would realize that this business connects the most with outer people, and the most you want to do is satisfy them. now of course keeping to the book would satisfy all of us narniawebbers im sure, however there are some people out there or want to mess with things. the only thing i dont like is that when people who have not read the books see the movie, and then read them, they'll be confused and not be able to enjoy the book as much anymore! that happened to my little sister. after we watched prince caspian she read a short version of the book and couldnt understand why she couldnt find the night raid or the romance in there, and i had to tell it they werent. of course she then began to wonder why the movie was like that. see, its annoying!

  44. always narnian says:

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I am very angry! I knew it! I knew they would change things! Dumb dumb dumb!!! I don't like it at all!

  45. narnian resident says:

i agree with glumpuddle as well. though i am not liking the changes very much,(in fact im a person who doesnt like any change, thats why im not liking this) i understand perfectly why they do it. they just want to make a successful movie, and sometimes changes are needed to make it successful. PC's changes did work with the story very well (except for the romance….blech) and i think that they can pull it off to make these changes work too. even though i wish badly they didnt make them, i will not fight it because i know it wont do much good. and besides, if they've done it great before twice now, they can do it again. all we can do right now is just trust and hope. me personally, its not the quality that really matters, its the whole spirit of narnia and C.S. Lewis thats in it. as long as they keep that alive, im good 😀

  46. edmund rox says:

And the twisting of the story begins…

  47. Lady Jill says:

I agree. I have a cousin (who isn't much of a true Narnian) and she loved how they added the kiss with Susan and Caspian in PC even though it was a total mess up from the book.

  48. narniafan4ever ♥ says:

    I know. Me either. 🙁

  49. Bother Eustace says:

Yeah, the Caspian/Edmund sword fight is just a friendly spar. Nothing to be worried about. In fact, it's just what I'd expect them to do… I would!

  50. Lillyput90 says:

Well, this piece of information is not a surprise to me. I thought that was what was going on, I just didn't know who's daughter Gael was. To me the whole mixing of Rhince/Rynelf doesn't affect me, if that's the only change, I'm good with it. So long as the finding of the Lords is properly explained and has it's due significance, I don't mind little, I say little, subplots. Also the bit with Lucy and the magicians book has to be emaculate, or I won't be very happy!

  51. Caspian says:

Right with you, my friend. I'm not too hot about the switching of roles. Rhince was a good first mate! And Rynelf sounds more…sailerly, somehow. It's not a big change of course, but even little things like that that are different from the book affect how the movie plays out (pardon the pun).

*sigh* Come on Apted. You're our only hope for keeping the Narnia series going. If VDT fails…this site gets a lot less attention. ;D lol

  52. Caspian says:

Oi. This is true. And they could always shove a Lucian scene or two in there, or have Gael/Eustace. And they'll have any number of other little things out of place I shouldn't wonder. But that's the spirit, Starlily. Look on the bright side of things. ;D

  53. Caspian says:

You get full support from me when it comes to hating the beard (and ponytail too, come to think of it). Everyone else seems to think he looks like Aragorn.

Which doesn't make it better. ;D lol

  54. MurtaghLuv says:

Interesting. but it might actually work. I don't really care about who is who, those characters are minor characters so it doesn't really matter. Just as long as the show the spritual connection.

  55. MurtaghLuv says:

    Agreed glumpuddle, so true.

  56. MurtaghLuv says:

And sometimes that is what we have to do, Lady of narnia, take the movie by its self. don't compare it with the book. even though I still think that it will follow the book just enough to say what Lewis did.

  57. Narniamiss says:

GP: I agree that PC needed a little more than what the book gave for a movie viewing, but don't have the same thoughts for Dawn Treader. I don't think they "should" changed DT at all; it is an excellent story, and I think viewers would love to see the story as it is; even people who haven't even read the story. I'm not saying I'm totally against changes, but I do wish they would just leave this story alone.

  58. Fire Fairy says:

*shudders* Don't jinx it!!! We would NOT want any of that to happen!!!

  59. Narnianheart (narniafan#1) says:

Woah!! Rhince never had a daughter on the boat. . .right?!?!

  60. King Skandar the Just says:

huh…well I don't think it will be a problem. I wish they hadn't changed it though. Oh well, these things happen.
