The Kilns to Receive Plaque in Honor of Lewis

The Kilns, Lewis’ home in Risinghurst where he wrote the Chronicles of Narnia, will be decorated Saturday with a commemorative plaque in honor of the famous author. The C. S. Lewis Foundation hopes that the plaque will help tourists more easily find Lewis’ home of 33 years. The plaque will be erected by the Oxfordshire Blue Plaques Board, which has erected 40 such plaques at other authors’ home, including J. R. R. Tolkien’s residence on Northmoor Road. You can read the Oxford Mail’s full article on the event here.

Signed Chronicles Sell for Record Amount

On June 24th we reported in a Word on the Street piece that Lewis’ secretary Walter Hooper was putting his signed, first-edition copies of The Voyage of The Dawn Treader, The Horse And His Boy, and The Last Battle up for auction at Sotheby’s in London on July 17. The auction took place and the three Narnia books were sold for a combined sum of £30,000 (VoDT raised £10,625; HHB raised £10,000; and LB raised £9,375), which was about three times what it was expected they would make. Hooper is donating the money to an Oxford church. You can read the Oxford Mail’s article here and the Belfast Telegraph’s article here. Thanks KnightofGondor for the heads-up!

Armani Impressed with Ben Barnes

Emerald writes us with a clipping from the New York Daily News: "Giorgio Armani would seem to be a little to old for ’The Chronicles of Narnia’. But we hear the 74 year old icon absolutely loves the looks of Ben Barnes, who plays Prince Caspian in the epic movie. A source says Armani invited the 26 year old actor aboard his yacht. Insiders wonder if Barnes may soon become a soldier in Armani’s army of celeb models, which includes David Beckham and Djimon Hounsou. Reps for Armani and Barnes declined comment."

Will Moseley Talks About the PC Video Game

The BBC’s Michael Osborn recently talked to Will Moseley and Arthur Parson of Traveller’s Tales (creators of the PC video game) about how the video game was made. Will compares his work on the video game to "something out of Dr. Who," and that the voiceover work for the video game was harder than his acting in the film. There is also a brief video on the making of the game. The article goes on to say that Will Moseley will be co-starring in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, but this is likely a mistake. You can read the full article here. Thanks CaspianThePrince and Kate Locksley for the heads-up!

Skandar Attends Lebanon Screening, Charity Event

Skandar Keynes was present for the Lebanon screening of Prince Caspian on Friday, July 11, at his mother’s hometown Marjayoun. The event was organized as a charity by Skandar’s mother, Zefra Hourani, to benefit the local Atallah Sports Club. This organization, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, provides athletic facilities for children in the greater Marjayoun area, including a gymnasium, a studio for Taekwondo lessons, aerobics and kick-boxing, and more. The Club’s founder and president Walid Atallah said that he hoped to use all the money raised by the screening to add new classes and facilities. You can read the full article here.

Eddie Izzard Suggested as the Next Doctor Who

From The Geek Files: Actor Sylvester McCoy, who played the 7th Doctor Who in 1987-1989, says Eddie Izzard would be perfect to take over from current Time Lord David Tennant. Speaking to Teletext’s Showbiz Spy, he said: "I like Tom Baker’s suggestion which he made a while back. Eddie Izzard would be perfect!" Fourth Doctor Tom Baker had suggested cross-dressing comedian Izzard for the Time Lord role in 2003. Back then, Alan Davies and Richard E Grant were the bookies’ favourites to take the role. Baker told the BBC that Izzard would bring an ’alien quality’ to the Doctor. Read the whole story here. Thanks to Knight of Gondor for the heads-up.

New Ben Barnes Interview with the Sunday Times

Ben Barnes recently talked to Stephen Armstrong of the Sunday Times about his role in Prince Caspian. This interview has a lot of stuff we’ve seen before about Ben not really wanting to be a heartthrob and his part in the band Hyrise, but there are some new tidbits about how he got sick from the stress of his first press junket, how Prince William and Prince Harry provided some inspiration for his role as Prince Caspian, and how he’s worked hard to get to the point he’s at in his acting career. You can read the full interview here. Thanks Jints and KnightofGondor for the heads-up!

VDT Filming Start Date Bumped Again?

There are reports floating around that the filming start date for The Voyage of the Dawn Treader has been bumped once again, from October 2008 to January 2009. The reports have been subtle and have appeared in news stories like this one here. The Sun writes: "In January [Ben] will start on the production of C.S. Lewis’s third Narnia tale The Voyage of the Dawn Treader." And NarniaWebber Jints says that at the O2 London premiere of Prince Caspian, Ben Barnes announced in front of the 10,000 attendees that The Voyage of the Dawn Treader would indeed start filming in Jan. 2009. We have not yet confirmed this with the production, but it seems very likely as only a month or two ago, Ben Barnes was saying filming would start in October, and he probably knows what he’s talking about.
There are also a few rumors going around saying that the release date for The Voyage of the Dawn Treader may be changing as well, to either December 2009 or December 2010, probably in response to the less-than-stellar performance of Prince Caspian at the summer box office. But if filming doesn’t start until January 2009, then the December 2009 release date is out of the question. We’ll keep you posted as soon as we hear anything definite.

Disney’s Stock Dips Despite ’Wall•E’, ’Prince Caspian’

The LA Times is reporting that Disney’s stock is down 37 cents, despite Wall•E’s strong opening weekend. Analysts are saying that part of the reason for the decrease is Prince Caspian’s underperformance in the domestic box office. Another factor is that the entire media sector is dropping in stock value, hitting a five-year low yesterday. You can read the full article here.

Critics Like McAvoy in ’Wanted’

James McAvoy (Tumnus) continues to have a great career following the success of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. His latest film, Wanted, went up against Disney’s WALL*E this weekend and performed above expectations ($51 Million). The movie received generally positive reviews, and critics liked James’ performance. One critic writes: "The twist, though, is that the actor playing Wesley is James McAvoy, the romantic lead from Atonement. He’s a great and unusual choice; it’s like casting Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate when everyone was expecting someone like Robert Redford. McAvoy’s very much against type as an action hero. His performance gives a fresh take to the action film." The film is loosely based on the comic book miniseries by Mark Millar, and there are rumors of a possible sequel in the works. (Rated R for strong bloody violence throughout, pervasive language and some sexuality)
